West Hempstead, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University men's tennis was back in action the West Hempstead Indoor Tennis Center on Friday morning, as the Panthers played host to the Avengers of ASA College for their annual non-conference meeting with the back-to-back NJCAA National Champions. The Avengers swept singles and doubles in the match to come away with a 9-0 decision.
A clean sweep of the doubles gave the Avengers a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, although the Panthers gave solid efforts at all three flights. Adelphi's closest match came at No. 1 doubles, as Matteo Cannavera and Uladzislau Litvinchuk fell by an 8-5 final score.
In singles, the Avengers recorded straight set wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, while Adelphi's No. 1 player Cannavera was forced to retire after five games in his opening set due to an injury. Sander Brenner was forced to a deciding tiebreak after winning the first set over Abubakar Tswako, while Roey Heymann also forced his match to decider after getting bageled in the first set. However, both players from ASA proved too strong in the match tiebreaks, taking them by 10-6 and 10-4 decisions, resepctively, to give the visitors the singles sweep and the 9-0 win."We are building our momentum each match," Interim Head Coach
Joanna Haich stated. "We are also moving in the right direction for the season as we are playing high quality teams these first few weeks. We look forward to playing Concordia
tomorrow."
