West Hempstead, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University men's tennis team returned to the courts on Thursday to host regional powerhouse and East Coast Conference team NYIT in the first match of the Panthers' spring season. With NYIT leading the Panthers 2-1 after doubles, the Bears swept singles play to record an 8-1 victory.
After being handed defeats at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles,
Matteo Cannavera and
Uladzislau Litvinchuk got the Panthers on the board headed to singles, as they teamed up to record an 8-6 victory at top flight doubles over Nicolas Auruccio and Tomas Lieb.
The Bears proved to be too strong in singles, taking all six matches with the loss of just one set. In his Adelphi debut, freshman
Daniel Khodosh fought hard, rallying from a one-sided first set to take the second in a tiebreak and pushing No. 6 singles into a deciding super-tiebreak before falling 6-1, 6-7, 10-7.
"It was a good opening match today for the men's team," Interim Head Coach
Joanna Haich stated. "I'm proud with the fight all the players gave out on the court today. As a team, we are coming together and hope to put all the pieces together in next few weeks on court."
