Staten Island, N.Y. - On Thursday evening, the Adelphi University swimming program took both sides of a meet at Staten Island with the women coming out in victory with a 150-44 score while the men came away with a 113-100 win. In the process of the women's win,
Grace Zhang set a new school record during the 50-yard freestyle.
In the 50 free race, Zhang claimed first place behind a time of 25.06 to rewrite the school record held by Jerri Lester from 2004. Zhang just beat Lester's time of 25.07. The sophomore also added a victory in the 100 back after touching the wall at 1:01.04. Zhang was one of five individuals to bring home two victories on the night that was also among eight student-athletes earning first place finishes.
Danielle Dreiss picked up her two victories during freestyle events throughout the night. In the 1,000 distance, the junior posted an 11:34.84 time followed by a 500 clocking of 5:26.06.
Jacqueline Vani added a victory of 2:20.91 in the 200 individual medley followed by a 100 breast winning time of 1:12.03 to aid the women's effort.
Kelly Whelan and
Amanda Crosby rounded out the first place finishes for the women's 150 points on the evening behind an even 58.00 in the 100 free for Whelan and a 2:08.97 win in the 200 free for Crosby.
On the men's side,
Josef Victor Sarabia and
Zachary Mazur totaled two victories each. Sarabia first won the 200 individual medley in 2:10.45 followed by a 100 breast victory of 1:04.35. Meanwhile, Mazur claimed two wins in freestyle events with a 50 victory of 22.32 before a 100 distance win of 49.78.
John Bellotti earned a solo victory during the 100 back by clocking in at 59.88.
The Panthers also started and ended the evening with victories on the both the men's and women's relays. In the 200 medley relay,
Kelly Reyes led off the team of Crosby, Vani, and Whelan to clock in at 2:00.82 before the men's quartet of Bellotti, Sarabia,
Peter D'Ortenzio and Mazur combined for a 1:44.64 finish. To end the evening, Zhang, Whelan, Reyes, and Dreiss totaled a winning time of 3:56.29 followed by a 3:23.62 victory from Bellotti,
Gerry Theophilidis,
Ryan Mullin, and D'Ortenzio.
The Brown and Gold next compete at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships from Thursday, February 4 through Sunday, February 7.
