Box Score Springfield, Mass. - After falling behind 1-0 just over a minute into the contest, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team scored 18 unaswered goals en route to a 20-3 victory over the host Yellow Jackets of American International College on Wednesday afternoon.
Jacqueline Jahelka and Rachel O'Brien led the Adelphi (11-0, 8-0 NE-10) offense on the day as each tallied seven points; Jahelka's game-high five goals were paired with two assists, while O'Brien scored two goals and dished out five helpers. Emily Keesling put up six points on four goals and two assists, while Alexa Froccaro scored three goals to go along with two from Felicia Mills and Danielle Jaycox. Three players recorded unassisted goals for the Yellow Jackets (3-10, 0-9 NE-10).Cheyenne Carden got the home team on the board by beating
Taylor Hayes in goal just 1:09 into the contest as the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a
Kelly Osmulski turnover. From there, however, the Panthers responded with four goals in just over two minutes of action to open up a three-goal advantage and a lead they would never relinquish. Jaycox went back-to-back in under a minute beginning at 24:51, and both of O'Brien's scores came consecutively as well to put Adelphi up 5-1 midway through the half.
The first of Jahelka's four first-half goals came at 12:58, but she rattled off three in a row off of feeds from O'Brien late in the action to turn an 8-1 game into an 11-1 contest. Keesling's second goal of the contest came with 2:19 remaining in the half and saw Adelphi go into the break up 12-1.
The Panthers scored the first six goals of the second half as well, beginning with Mills' successful execution of a free position shot just 33 seconds into the period. With the lead standing at 18-1, the Yellow Jackets got two goals back, but Beth Anne Pierce and
Casey Zalewski each recorded goals off of assists from Natalie Badalato and
Allison Schneider in the final five minutes to send the Brown and Gold home with a 20-3 win.
As a team, the Panthers outshot the Yellow Jackets 44-5 and won the battle to pick up more ground balls (30 to 16) and cause more turnovers (27 to 17). In goal, Yellow Jacket keeper Alexis Torosian stopped 16 shots, compared to just one for Hayes.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a 1 pm NE-10 contest.
