Men's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with 8-1 Win at Assumption, Clinches No. 2 Seed in NE-10 Tournament

Panthers will host a semifinal match on Thursday.

Holden, Mass. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team closed out the regular season with an 8-1 win over the Assumption Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon, and in the process clinched both the No. 2 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, a quarterfinal bye and a home semifinal match this Thursday.

For the third straight match, the Brown and Gold (9-4, 9-1 NE-10) moved ahead 3-0 in the match by sweeping doubles action. All three matches were hard-fought, as Matteo Cannavera and Uladzislau Litvinchuk, along with Sander Brenner and Justin Vijungco, took 8-5 victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Playing for the first time together all season, Chiwete Njokanma and Sebastian Zapata assured Adelphi the third point as they edged out a tiebreak set, 9-8, against Marco Leung and Tom Knight of Assumption (9-9, 6-4 NE-10) at third flight.

In singles, Adelphi claimed five singles matches, all in straight sets, to clinch the victory. Cannavera led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win, while Njokanma followed up at No. 4 with a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0 victory. Brenner edged Viljami Rahnasto in a tight first set before rolling in the second to the tune of a 7-5, 6-0 win, while Zapata and Vijungco took home straight-forward 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Clinching the No. 2 seed with today's win, Adelphi will host the winner of the match between No. 6 Le Moyne and No. 3 Stonehill on Thursday following a quarterfinal bye. The full schedule for the conference tournament is as follows:
