Box Score 2 Azusa, CA – Solid defense was no match for timely hitting as the Adelphi University softball team fell twice to Azusa Pacific, 2-0 and 3-1 on Tuesday evening in Azusa California. The Panthers post a 0-4 record as the Cougars improve to 6-5 overall.
Brenna Martini registered the only two Adelphi hits in the first game, as
Lindsay Mapes held the Cougars to just three hits in six innings of work, striking out three. Game two featured much of the same offense as
Krista King and
Nicole Camera collected a hit each and
Victoria Wink went 2-3 at the plate.
Jasmine Ennabe completed six innings of work, facing 23 batters, giving up three hits in the loss.
Game 1No hits were registered for either team through the first inning as both defenses shut down and retired the first three batters in both lineups. Martini ripped a base hit up the middle, but was unable to be brought around by her teammates. Azusa Pacific threatened as well in the bottom of the second with runners in scoring position but Mapes retired Renae Chappelle to leave the Cougars stranded.
Mapes and the Adelphi defense held the hosts scoreless for the next four innings, until several defensive Panther miscues allowed Azusa Pacific to get two runners in scoring position. A suicide squeeze allowed Illiana Jimenez to score and set up the field for the same situation. Again the Cougars dropped a successful bunt, scoring Nicki Sprague and taking a 2-0 lead over Adelphi which would result in the final score and victory for the home team.
Game 2In the same fashion that Azusa Pacific got on the board in game one, they wasted no time in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers did not score until the top of the third inning as Wink drove a shot to left centerfield, scoring King, who occupied second after beating out an infield single.
A leadoff walk started bottom of the fifth inning, but the Cougars were doubled-up with a high fly ball to Martini, who threw the runner out at first. The home team threatened once more, but stranded a runner at second as Ennabe fired past Abry Moreno, ending the inning.
A solo shot by Sprague in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the home team a 3-1 advantage over the Brown and Gold. Camera drew a walk with one out, bringing up
Megan Lewis, who drove a ball up the middle, advancing Camera. The final score stood at 3-1 in favor of the home team, as the Panther offense was unable to string together multiple hits.
Adelphi will return to the field on Wednesday, February 18, as they travel to California State University San Bernardino to compete at 12 and 2 p.m. PST. Check the softball schedule on game-day for links to follow the game live.
