Garden City, N.Y. - Jamie Apicella has been named as the next head coach of the Adelphi University softball program, effective immediately.

"Becoming the head coach here at Adelphi is more than just an opportunity to me; it's an honor to lead, inspire and make a lasting impact," Apicella said. "I'm incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me. I'm excited to build something special, develop our players, embrace the challenges ahead and represent this team with pride. This is a responsibility I don't take lightly, and I'm ready to give everything I have to help us reach our full potential and continue the great tradition of the Adelphi softball program."

Apicella brings a wealth of softball knowledge in his over 20 years coaching. Most recently he served as the Director of Softball Operations for Beast Softball NY.

"We are happy to welcome Jamie Apicella as the new head softball coach at Adelphi," said Director of Atheltics and Recreation, Danny McCabe. "Jamie has a tremendous reputation in the softball community on Long Island and in the NY Metropolitan area. He brings a wealth of experience to Garden City as well as a fantastic track record of success. As an Adelphi parent, Jamie also has a deep appreciation for Adelphi University and Adelphi Athletics."

Apicella most recently coached at Mount Sinai High School as the varsity head coach, where he won two league titles while also being named the Coach of the Year twice. Prior to Mount Sinai, he was an assistant coach at Stony Brook University, where he played roles in development, preparation, practice plans and team defenses.

Apicella served as the head coach of LIU Post from 1999-2019 where he had a .709 winning percentage and earned 826 career wins, making him the winningest coach in any LIU sport since 1926. His decorated coaching career featured five Division II College World Series appearances, 19 East Regional appearances and nine East Coast Conference championships. He was named the ECC Coach of the Year five times while coaching seven All-Americans.

While at LIU Post, Apicella also served as the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities, overseeing and supervising 12 acres of outdoor athletic fields, as well as being project manager for all athletics capital and construction projects. He served in a variety of other roles as well, including managing regulations, coordinating department events, implementing online scheduling software and overseeing campus vehicle safety.

Apicella is still actively involved in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association serving as a member of the advisory committee and a National Top 25 Northeast Regional Representative. He is also a Divison II East Region representative for NCAA softball.

Before his time coaching, Apicella played professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization. He was drafted by the team as an outfielder in the 1994 Amateur Baseball Draft. Apicella spent two seasons in the Giants' minor league system with their Class A affiliate, the Everett Giants, before beginning his coaching career.

"I want to sincerely thank Danny McCabe, Jessica Roque and the entire hiring committee for the confidence and trust you have placed in me," Apicella said. "I'm truly honored to have been selected as the head coach, and I'm grateful for the time and consideration that went into this process. I am eager to get started and be a part of the Adelphi community."
