Garden City, N.Y. - Head Coach Robert Smith debuted with two wins on Saturday as the Adelphi University swimming team defeated SUNY Purchase on both sides with the men winning 70-6 and the women claiming victory at 40-37.
The day got started with both sides taking part in the 200-yard medley relay, with Purchase claiming victory on the women's side followed by a Brown and Gold win for the men. John Bellotti, Philip Guariglia, Ryan Mullin, and Spencer Ganley raced to a 1:50.21 to earn the win for Adelphi.
Heather Miller touched first in the 100 free for Adelphi, clocking in at 57.93, just ahead of a 58.12 time and second place for Danielle Dreiss. Zachary Mazur and Peter D'Ortenzio finished first and second in the same event for the men with respective times of 50.28 and 50.89. After helping the relay team to a win, Guariglia
earned a solo win in the 100 IM behind a 1:07.16 finish before returning in the 16th event of the day for a 32.04 winning time in the 50 breast.
D'Ortenzio extended the men's lead to 31-3 with five points in the same event after a first palce time of 24.84. Mazur returned for another victory for the men's team in the 50 free by racing to a 23.30.
Adelphi strung together three straight wins from events 12 through 14 as Bellotti kicked off the streak with a 28.46 performance in the 50 back followed by a Dreiss win in the 500 at 5:33.21 and Gerry Theophilidis putting forth a 5:21.93 in the men's 500.
The afternoon concluded as it began with a pair of relay races. Dreiss anchored the fourth leg of the 200 free relay along with Heather Miller, Amanda Crosby, and Kelly Whelan combining for a 1:48.42 finish and helped clinch the victory. On the men's side, Mazur, Theophilidis, Jonathan Ruiz, and D'Ortenzio went in order for the win on the men's side by teaming up for a 1:32.42.
The Panthers return to the pool this Saturday with a 1:00 pm meet at Montclair State University.
