Manchester, N.H. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team opened its fall season on Friday, September 12 with an 8-1 Northeast-10 Conference win against the Hawks of Sain Anselm College. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead at the close of doubles play, and didn't look back from there to open the year at 1-0 overall and in the NE-10. Saint Anselm falls to 0-1.
Junior
Sander Brenner led the Panthers' effort on the day, not allowing a single game to his opponents in singles or doubles. To open the match, Brenner teamed with
Chiwete Njokanma to blank Eric Howes and Adam Weinstein, 8-0, before he also defeated Howes at top flight singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Panthers took a 3-0 lead at the close of doubles play by sweeping the other two flights with the loss of just two games.
Christopher Buckley recorded his first collegiate win alongside
Justin Vijungco at No. 3 doubles.
Vijungco followed Brenner's lead, and also recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win against John Joyce at No. 4 singles. Njokanma and
Sebastian Zapata were similarly efficient in singles play, dropping just three games in four sets combined. To close out the match,
Ryan Villarruel rebounded from dropping the second set to upend Kyle Harris in a match tiebreak, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, and wrap up the win for the Brown and Gold.
