Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team completed their three game series with the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon. The Chargers bounced back after Friday's 4-3, twelve-inning loss to takes game one 10-4 and game two in a 15-8 decision. The Panthers drop to 21-21 overall and 14-12 in league play. The lone win on Friday afternoon was enough to clinch a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference playoffs, slated to begin Wednesday, May 7. The Blue and White improve to 22-11 and 17-9 in the NE-10.
Cliff Brantley led the Panther offense over the twinbill, going 4-for-8 at the plate with three runs and three RBIs, all while posting a .625 slugging percentage.
Kevin Hutzel went 3-for-6 (.500) which included one double. His .667 slugging percentage led the team, despite the losses.
Game 1Adelphi was the first to jump on the board in the bottom of the third as a Brantley single up the middle plated
Eric Hassell. The visitors answered back immediately in the top of the fourth as Zach Collett of New Haven blasted a solo shot over the left field fence.
The Blue and White scored five just two innings later followed by another four over the last three innings. The Brown and Gold went to work in the bottom of the eighth as Brantley doubled, scoring
Vincent Sharkey and
Michael Stack.
Richard Mejia flew out to left field but picked up an RBI as Brantley trotted home.
Game 2After New Haven jumped out to a stifling 3-0 lead in the top of the second, Adelphi did all it could to chip away at the lead. Scoring twice in the bottom of the second, they managed to bring the game within one, as the Chargers held a 3-2 lead. The bottom of the third, the Panthers plated Rich Mejia and Hutzel on a
Robert Vani double to left to take their first lead of the game, 4-3.
Maintaining momentum, the home team tacked on another run in the bottom of the fouth as
Nick Zito doubled to centerfield, scoring Brantley. As the wind picked up, so did the Charger bats, as the visiting team managed to push across six runs in the top of the fifth and another four in the top of the sixth.
Adelphi had some fight left in them as they scored three in the bottom of the sixth however the Charger bullpen held them scoreless for the remainder of the game, making the final score 15-8.
The Panthers will learn their fate at the conclusion of regular season games on Monday afternoon. The Northeast-10 Conference playoffs are slated to begin Wednesday. Check back at www.aupanthers.com for the upcoming schedule.
