Baseball Eliminates #3 NE Stonehill College

The Panthers advance to Championship Sunday, where they will need to defeat unbeaten Southern New Hampshire twice.

Senior captain Stephen Bove pitched a complete game to get his team to Championship Sunday to face the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire.
Box Score Manchester, NH - The Adelphi University baseball team managed to work their way back up through the losers bracket to advance to Championship Sunday on Penmen Field to compete for the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Championship title. The Panthers defeated the Skyhawks of Stonehill College 7-2 , after previously losing to them on the first day of the tournament, 3-1. The Skyhawks slide to 30-20 overall.

The Brown and Gold carried their momentum from their earlier 5-2 win over the University of New Haven into the second matchup against Stonehill College. The Panthers scored four runs on three hits in the top of the first alone to take a 4-0 lead right off the bat. Aelphi's four runs came courtesy of a Vani single, that scored Richard Mejia and Kevin Hutzel, a Zykoff double to right field that plated Vani and a Skyhawk error, that allowed Cliff Brantley to slip across home plate.

Stonehill got one run back in the bottom of the second off of a home run over the wall in dead center, but the Stephen Bove became very stingy, holding the Skyhawks scoreless for the next six innings. In all, Bove threw a stellar nine innings, scattering nine hits, giving up just two runs, striking out four and walking no one, earning his second win of the season.

The Brown and Gold tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth on a Brantley single up the middle, that scored Michael Stack, who reached on an inning opening infield single to second. Brantley would use his speed to score Adelphi's second run of the inning, taking advantage of a fielding error by the Stonehill centerfielder to put the Panthers on top, 6-1.

Adelphi's final run of the game came in the top of the seventh, off the bat of Vani, who hit into a 4-6-3 double play, but hit it hard enough to allow Mejia, who led the frame off with a double, to score, 7-1. Stonehill attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run on a ground out, that allowed a Skyhawk player on third to slip home. However, Bove shut the door quickly, striking out the final batter of the game swinging.

Brantley swung a hot bat, going 3-5 with two runs scored, while Mejia and Vani were both 2-4, Mejia with two runs and an RBI, and Vani with one run and two RBI.
