Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team used a 3-0 sweep in doubles to record a 6-3 final victory over the Stonehill College Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers improve to 7-5 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Skyhawks fall to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
The Panthers could not put a foot wrong on the doubles court, as they swept all three matches to put themselves in the lead.
Ryan Villarruel and
Sebastian Zapata led the way at first doubles and came out on the winning end of an 8-6 set.
Sander Brenner and
Uladzislau Litvinchuk continued their strong play at second doubles, picking up an 8-5 win, and
Chiwete Njokanma and
Justin Vijungco completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at the No. 3 spot.
With Brenner falling in a tough three set battle at first singles and Villarruel forced to retire due to a back injury in the second spot, the match was finely poised in the closing stages of singles play. However, the trio of Njokanma, Litvinchuk and Vijungco continued their strong play of late to see Adelphi over the finish line. Litvinchuk proved to be the difference-make for Adelphi, as he rallied after losing the opening set to win 3-6, 6-1 7-6.

Coach's Thoughts on the Match"Today was a tough win, as the match was at one point 3-3, and could have swung either way," Head Coach
Michael Misiti stated. "Once again, our improvement in doubles helped us win the match, something I've stressed all year. We are also strong 1-6 and showing good depth. The injury to Ryan (Villaruel) will hopefully not be too bad, as we need all of our players for he remainder of the season."
Up NextThe Panthers return to action on Friday, April 11 when they travel to Franklin Pierce for a 10 am Northeast-10 Conference match.
