Baseball Earns 4-3 Victory Over Pace University in 13 Inning Thriller

Alex Zykoff's pinch-hit single in the top of the 13th inning scored the eventual game-winning run.
Box Score Pleasantville, N.Y. - After tying the game in the top of the ninth, the Adelphi University baseball team held on for four more innings to earn a 4-3 victory over the Pace University Setters, after scoring one run in the top of the 13th inning. The southwest divisional win improves the Panthers to 20-19 overall, 13-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference and 8-7 in the division. The hosts fall to 12-22 on the season, 6-17 in NE-10 play and 5-10 in divisional play.

Four Panthers registered multi-hit games wiht Cliff Brantley leading the way as he went 3-for-6 at the plate and crossed home twice. Vincent Sharkey also when 3-for-6 and Richard Mejia had a 2-for-7 day with 2 RBIs and one run scored. Michael Stack accounted for a run as he went 2-for-6 in the win. Matthew Abramowitz earns his second win of the season as he threw 2.0 complete innings of scoreless relief and collected four strikeouts.

The hosts had the first runs on the board, scoring two in the bottom of the second inning at Finnerty Field. A walk to load the bases followed by a consecutive walk, pushed Domenick Luongo across the plate for the first run of the game. With two outs Jonathon Mulford hit Tom Midolo to scored Brett Bittiger from third, to give the Setters a 2-0 lead.

Wasting no time the Panthers were able to chip away at the lead as they rallied for their first run of the game in the top of the third. With Brantley on second after his second single of the game to right field, he was driven in by a Mejia hit up the middle. The Blue and White struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring one run on one hit to take a 3-1 lead.

The Adelphi bullpen and defense held the Setters scoreless for the next four innings, but not before the Panther offense tied the game in the top of the ninth, 3-3, on another Mejia single which scored Brantley. The teams went through the next three innings without any producing any runs on either side.

The heroics shined in the top of the 13th inning as Kevin Hutzel drew a lead-off walk followed by Mejia reaching on a fielding error by the Pace shortstop, giving Hutzel the chance to scamper into third. With one out, Robert Vani was intentionally walked to load the bases. An Alex Zykoff pinch-hit single scored Mejia to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead. Abramowitz kept his cool on the hill, striking out two of the five batters he faced in the bottom of the 13th, earning the victory for Adelphi.

The Panthers will return to action tomorrow as they travel across town to Molloy College to face the Lions in non-conference play. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. and livestats can be accessed here.
