Garden City, N.Y. - Saturday afternoon, after celebrating the accomplishments of the graduating seniors of the Adelphi Baseball program, the squad played host to Saint Thomas Aquinas College in non-conference doubleheader action. The Panthers were unable to score more than three runs on the day, dropping an 8-3 decision, followed by a 7-0 finale. The visiting Spartans improve to 27-12 overall as the home team falls to 19-19 on the season.

Richard Mejia swung a hot bat in the first game, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs of the three runs scored. Kevin Hutzel went 2-for-4 in that game, accounting for one run and the third RBI. Freshman Michael Stack matched Hutzel, going 2-for-4 with one run. Stephen Bove started for the Brown and Gold, completing 5.2 innings of work in which he scattered six hits for one run. Cliff Brantley had the lone hit for Adelphi in the second game, as the Spartan bullpen was nearly perfect with 16 groundouts.

Game 1
After going down 1-0 in the top of the second inning, the Panthers held the visitors scoreless til the final two innings, but not before squeaking in three runs of their own. The first time Adelphi held the lead was in the bottom of the fifth, after scoring two runs on three hits. As the defense attempted to get the lead out, Stack hustled into second and Rob Burns reachd safely at first. Brantley took over sacrifice duties, putting the two in scoring position. Hutzel came up with a heavy stick and legged out a double up the middle scoring Stack. Mejia followed suit with a single to right field which pushed Burns across home plate.

The Spartans managed to put seven runs on the board form eight hits in the top of the eighth and ninth inning, putting the game out of reach for the hosts.

Game 2
The seventh inning second game played out much like the first, as the Maroon and Gold were the first to score with four runs in the top of the second inning on one hit and one Panther miscue. The Spartans were led by Derek Hirsch in the second game as he went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Adelphi bullpen held the opposing team to just five hits, but were unable to spark any offense Saturday afternoon.

The team will return to action on Tuesday, April 29 as they travel to Pleasantville, New York to take on the Setters of Pace University in divisional play. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
