Rachel O'Brien and
Alexa Froccaro combined for eight goals, carrying the second ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team past Northeast-10 opponent Bentley University on Saturday, April 26 in their regular season finale. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 17-0 overall and 12-0 in the conference, capturing the programs third Northeast-10 regular season championship in the past five seasons. With the lose, the Falcons slip to 8-8 overall and 7-5 in conference action.
O'Brien tallied five of Adelphi's 15 goals on the afternoon, while Froccaro added four points on three goals and an assist.
Devan Crimi also had four points, scoring two goals and handing out two assists, while
Danielle Jaycox chipped in a goal and two helpers. In addition, Jackie Jahelka and
Rachel Aitkens scored twice each.
Lauren Janelli led the defense, causing four turnovers, while Jahelka,
Meg Brown, and
Jacqueline Williams caused two turnovers each.
Felicia Mills led Adelphi with six draw controls and Williams picked up five, while
Camille Rosellini led all players with five ground balls.
Taylor Hayes went the distance in goal, making three stops in her 15th win of the season.
O'Brien opened the goal scoring 3:41 into the action, off of a pass from Froccaro, and Bentley answered back 1:09 later, knotting the action at one all. However, the Panthers kept the pressure on and 10 minutes later Aitkens put a ripple in the back of the Falcon net, kick starting a six goal run that lasted 10 minutes, and featured three tallies from O'Brien and two from Froccaro. Bentley stopped the run at six goals, notching their second tally of the game with 1:53 left in the half, making the Brown and Gold lead, five at the half.
Momentum remained on Adelphi's side in the second half, as the Panthers came out firing, scoring five more goals, two off the stick of Jahelka, to push their lead to 10, 12-2, with 16:14 left in the contest. The hosts would score five of the final eight goals of the contest, but it was not enough, as the Brown and Gold picked up a, 15-7 win.
Adelphi held an advantage in every major statistical category, including shots, 31-15, ground balls, 20-18, draw controls, 18-5 and committed less turnovers, 22-27.
