Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team picked up a non-conference victory Thursday afternoon against Dominican College on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The 6-2 decision in favor of the Panthers improves their record to 14-12 overall, as the visitors drop to 9-15 on the season. Three members of the home team accounted for 11 of their 14 hits in the win.
Richard Mejia swung a hot bat, despite the below 50 degree weather, going 4-for-4 at the plate, which included three doubles, three RBIs and two runs.
Cliff Brantley was almost perfect, going 3-for-4 with to runs scored.
Kyle Ambury also registered a multi-hit game, going 4-for-4 with one run scored.
Michael Ceparano started on the hill for the Panthers, scattering six hits for the only two runs that the Chargers would score, giving him his third win of the season.
The visiting team wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring their only runs in the top of the first on three hits. But Adelphi was quick to respond as they took the lead in the bottom of the first, which they held for the remainder of the game. Brantley reached on an infield single and proceeded to steal second and third after no one was at the base to receive the throw. Mejia picked up his first two RBI, hitting a deep ball to left center scoring Brantley and Hutzel. Ambury picked up his first single of the game down the right field line, which scored Mejia.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Ambury came in to score on a sacrifice fly by
Nick Zito to lead the Chargers 4-2. The home team would strike again as Mejia blasted his second double of the game to bring Brantley across the plate to take on a 5-2 lead. The final run for Adelphi came in the bottom of the seventh inning as Mejia found himself on base for the fourth time, on a double to deep centerfield.
Eric Hassell singled to left, scoring Mejia for his first RBI.
Matt Abramowitz and
Nikolas Batas took on reliever duties to close the game, combining for one hit, two strikeouts and no runs in three innings.
