Adelphi Baseball Drops Pitcher's Duel to American Int'l Yellow Jackets, 1-0

The teams remained scoreless until AIC scored in the top of the eighth inning.

Chris "Rocco" Lemorocco gave up one run on four hits with eight strikeouts in 8.0 complete innings.
Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - On an overcast and misty Sunday, the Adelphi University baseball team dropped a 1-0 decision to the American International College Yellow Jackets on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. What was supposed to be a doubleheader, turned into a single game pitcher's duel in which the visiting team came out victorious, scoring one in the top of the eighth inning. The game drops Adelphi to 7-10 overall and 3-3 in league play as AIC improves to 6-10 on the season and 1-3 in Northeast-10 play.

Freshman Chris Lemorocco started on the hill for Adelphi, retiring the first three Yellow Jackets in order. He ended the top of the second and third inning by picking off runners who had reached on singles. Overall the rookie gave up one run on four hits in 8.0 complete innings of work. He also collected eight strikeouts in the loss. Offensively, Vincent Sharkey went 2-for-3 as five of his teammates also registered hits.

Eric Hassell and Sharkey lead off the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles and were put into scoring position on a Michael Stack SAC bunt. Unfortunately they were stranded on base as Kevin Hutzel grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.

By the top of the sixth inning, Cam MacDonald was one of two Yellow Jackets to reach third base, after singling to left, stealing second and then advancing to third on a wild pitch. However, Lemorocco kept his cool, registering a strikeout to end the inning, stranding MacDonald on base.

The top of the seventh seemed promising for AIC after Lucas Vallas was hit by a pitch to get on base, advancing to third on a high throw from Hutzel in an attempt to pick him off. Lemorocco dug deep and struck out the next three batters in order to leave Vallas stranded at third. Two walks and a wild pitch later in the top of the eighth inning, the Yellow Jackets would push one run across on a Dan Asselin single to center.

The Panthers were unable to answer back, despite back-to-back singles by Hutzel and Brantley in the bottom of the ninth.
