Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team played host to Northeast-10 conference opponent Southern Connecticut State Thursday afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The squad picked up its third conference win, 4-3 despite the temperature for late March. The Owls drop to 6-9-1 overall and 1-3 in league play as Adelphi improves to 7-9. and 3-2 in the Northeast-10 and 1-0 in the Southwest Division.

Pacing the offense for the Brown and Gold was captain Kevin Hutzel, who had two hits, including a standup triple, accouting for two RBI in the win. Donato Signore went two-for-three with one run scored as three other Panthers registered hits. Michael Ceparano started on the hill for Adelphi, completing 5.1 innings, scattering four hits for two runs. John Bivas picks up his first win of the season allowing just two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The game started out slow offensively, with only three hits total between both teams in the first three innings. Ceparano's best came in the top of the second inning as he struck out three Owls to retire the side in order. The first half of the fourth inning looked much of the same as all three members of the Blue and White recorded fly-outs for the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Brandon Stahl and Signore would register back-to-back singles with no outs. A fielder's choice decision by SCSU pitcher Pat Egan, combined with an error gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead as Stahl scampered home. Signore pushed the lead to 2-0, scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning. Wasting no time, the Owls answered back with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth on two hits and stranded two on base at the conclusion of the inning.

The seventh inning featured singles by Vincent Sharkey and Eric Hassell who were both able to score on a two-out, standup triple by Hutzel, giving the Brown and Gold a 4-2 lead heading into the final two innings. Back-to-back singles from Southern Connecticut in the eighth, followed by a sacrifice fly cut the Panther lead to one, 4-3.

However, John Donnelly came in to close the game for Adelphi in the top of the eighth, working one strike out and then returned to the mound in the top of the ninth, striking out two and getting the final Owl to fly out in to seal the win.
