Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team invited Saint Anselm to Janet L. Ficke Field for a double dip on Sunday, March 23. A ptichers duel broke out in game one, until a solo home run from the Hawks, gave the visitors a 1-0 victory. The Panthers took advantage of five doubles in game two, collecting a 6-1 victory. With the split, Adelphi's overall record sits at 9-8 and 3-1 in Northeast-10 play, while Saint Anselm is now to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Game One
Adelphi put pressure on the Hawks in the bottom of the fourth, putting runners on second and third with two outs, thanks to an error, a
Niki Barbato single and a passed ball. Unfortunately, the Panthers could not capitilize, as
Jordan Catalano struck out swinging to end the threat.Â
What would be the winning run, was scored by the visitors in the top of the seventh on a no out, inning opening home run from Monique Gauthier.
Lindsay Mapes set the next three batters down in order to keep the game close with a half inning left.
In the bottom of the seventh, Barbato slapped a ball to short and hustled down the line, beating out the throw. She then took advantage of a momentary lapse in concentration from the Hawks, swiping second base, while no one was paying attention, giving the Brown and Gold a runner on second with one out. But, Tayla Trask was up to the challenge, striking out the final two batters to secure a 1-0 win for Saint Anselm.
Mapes was the hard luck loser in game one, throwing a nearly flawless seven innings, allowing four hits, one run and striking out six, while walking none. Barbato picked up two of Adelphi's three hits, going 2-3, while Catalano was credited with the other hit on a 1-3 effort.
Game Two
The Brown and Gold took control of game two early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and second innings. A two out double to left from
Victoria Wink got things started in the first, and a batter later, Andrews knocked her home with a single down the line in left. Barbato followed that up with another Panther double to left, scoring Andrews and giving Adelphi a 2-0 edge.
Stephanie Barbaro and
Courtney Sullivan opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles and were then plated on a
Jaclyn Binstock single up the middle and a
Danielle Cutuli fielder's choice, doubling Adelphi's lead. The Hawks managed to get one run back in the top of the third, taking advantage of a walk and an Adelphi miscue to pull within three runs, 4-1.
After two and a half scoreless innings, The Brown and Gold offense tacked on a couple more runs, getting two in the bottom of the sixth.
Courtney Sullivan opened the inning with a double to left and was driven in by a
Melaney Reichelt double to left. Reichelt advanced to third on a passed ball and touched home plate on a Cutuli single up the middle, to put the Panthers up five runs and three outs away from victory.
Andrews worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh, to collect her seventh win seventh win of the season. She tossed seven full innings, striking out one, walking one and giving up just one hit. She took a no-hitter into the top of the sixth inning. Andrews also helped her own cause, going 3-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI, while Reichelt was 2-2 with one run and one RBI. Sullivan was also 2-3 with two runs scored, and Barbato notched two hits as well.
