Baseball Opens Season with Road Win at Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-1

In his first outing in a Panther uniform, Cliff Brantley had one run and one hit in three at bats.
Box Score Virginia Beach, VA - Escaping the northeast and its polar vortex, the Adelphi University baseball team traveled south to face the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins in a single game on Sunday morning. First-inning scoring resulted in a 2-1 win for the Panthers, giving them their first victory of the season. Virginia Wesleyan falls to 3-8 on the year and 0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Cliff Brantley, Richard Mejia, Brandon Stahl and Vincent Sharkey each recorded a hit for the Brown and Gold. Senior Stephen Bove faced 11 Marlins, scattering 4 hits and earning one run in the process to pick up his first win of the year. Jonathon Mulford, Vincent Caputo, TJ Santiago and John Donnelly combined for 7.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits.

For Virginia Wesleyan, Brett Sutryk had two hits for the Marlins as Taylor Erby, Zach Bach, Austin Gammon and Jordan Miller each chipped in a hit of their own. Sean Greiser picks up his second loss of the season, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Will Hickey contributed 1.0 scoreless inning, with just one hit.

In his debut in a Panther uniform Brantley wasted no time getting himself in scoring position by singling to left, followed by stealing second. Hutzel joined him on the basepath on an error by Wesleyan's shortstop. Another error would put Adelphi up 1-0 on the Marlins, who were unable to escape the top of the first before another Panther scored.

A productive second inning by the Marlins would decrease the Panther lead to one (2-1) as a Miller single would score Gammon. Unable to push any more runs across, Wesleyan would hand Adelphi their first road win of the season with a final score of 2-1.
