Auburndale, FL - The Adelphi University softball team closed out their week long stay in Florida on Thursday, March 13 at the Rebel Spring Games against Minnesota State Mankato and Northern State. The Panthers pulled out a thrilling, come from behind victory against MSU Mankato in game one, 8-7, but fell to Northern State, 2-0 in the finale. The split leaves the Brown and Gold with a 3-7 as they head back to New York.
Adelphi vs. MSU - Mankato
The Mavericks pounced on the Panthers quickly, taking a 4-0 lead after just three outs. MSU-Mankato got two solo home runs and a single down the line in right field, that scored two more runs, to account for the 4-0 lead. The Panthers stole two runs back in the bottom of the first. The first run came on a
Niki Barbato single through the left side that plated
Danielle Cutuli, while a
Jordan Catalano ground out to second, allowed
Victoria Wink to scamper home, 4-2.
Another Maverick run cross home plate in the top of the third, courtesy of a sacrifice fly, making it a 5-2 game. However,
Katie Andrews helped her own cause with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, bring Cutuli around again, 5-3. An inning later, in the bottom of the fourth, the Panther offense exploded, scoring five runs and pulling ahead 8-5.Â
The first two of Adelphi's five runs jumped on the board thanks to a Cutuli double to right center that scored Jackie Binstock and
Melaney Reichelt, knotting the game at five. Wink would follow that up with a single, that scored Cutuli for the third time that day, giving Adelphi it's first lead of the game, 6-5. Two batters after that Barbato slammed a single up the middle, allowing both Wink and Andrews to take advantage of a Maverick miscue to come across home plate, giving the Panthers a three run cushion, 8-5.
MSU-Mankato would attempt a rally in the top of the sixth, using a single and a double to plate two runs, making it a one run game, heading into the seventh inning. Fortunately for Adelphi, Andrews was up to the task, giving up no runs and no hits in the frame to secure the Panthers third win of the season.
Andrews went the distance for Adelphi, throwing seven innings, giving up nine hits and seven runs. She also struck out one and walked five in the win. Andrews and Cutuli paced the offense with three hits each, while Cutuli drove in two runs and scored three and Andrews drove in two and scored one. Wink also had a multi-hit game with two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
Adelphi vs. Northern State
The first five and a half innings of play moved by in a scoreless blur as, with both teams struggling to break through and plate a run. The closest Adelphi woudl get was in the top of the fourth. The Panthers got three straight, two out, singles, from Catalano, Mary, O'Reilly and
Courtney Sullivan, loading the bases. However, Reichelt grounded to the third baseman, who touched the bag and ended the Brown and Gold threat.
Northern State knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, with a one out, two-run home run over the wall in right center. Adelphi went down in order in the top of the seventh, which sealed the Panthers, 2-0 loss.
Andrews went the distance again, throwing six innings in the loss, giving up just four hits and two runs, while striking out four. The Panthers got one hit from five different players, as Catalano, Sullivan, O'Reilly, Cutuli and Barbato managed to put the ball in play.

Adelphi returns to the Empire state on Friday, March 14 to prepare for a Sunday, March 16 meeting with the Dowling College Lions at Janet L. Ficke Field. First pitch for the double header is scheduled for noon.
