Boca Raton, FL - The Adelphi University baseball team was hosted by the Lynn University Fighting Knights Monday afternoon in a non-conference spring training contest. Despite matching hits with the home team, the Panthers were unable to pick up a win, ultimately falling 8-1. The Brown and Gold are now 1-4 on the year as the hosts improve to 19-4 overall.
Cliff Brantley lead the offense for the third time this season, posting three hits as teammate
Nick Zito chipped in two of his own. Getting the start for Adelphi Monday afternoon was rookie
Michael Ceparano, who scattered five hits in 3.1 innings of work, allowing just two runs. For the Knights, Sal Giardina Jr. led his team with two hits, two RBIs and one run. Winning pitcher Bill Mendek held the Panthers to six hits in 7.0 innings.
The top of the second inning saw promise as the Panthers loaded the bases on a
Donato Signore double- Zito reached after being hit and Houghton landed on first on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately the next batter hit into a double play followed by a strikeout to end the inning.
After three hits in the bottom of the second, rookie starter Ceparano got out with only one run scoring, stranding two other Fighting Knights on the base paths.
Stephen Bove relieved Ceparano in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded for the Blue and White and one out.
Vincent Sharkey grabbed a base hit with a perfectly placed bunt and moved to second on a sacrifice by freshman
Zack Levinson. Brantley drives a single to right field to advance Sharkey to third with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Vani flied out to end the inning and the Panthers wouldn't get to the sixth without the Fighting Knights scoring one more time to lead 3-0.
The Blue and White would push across three runs in the bottom of the eighth to hold an 8-0 lead going into the final inning.
John Campbell would hustle all the way to third to start a rally in the top of the ninth with one out. Levinson reached first on a fielder's choice, scoring Campbell. Brantley recorded his first double of the year, but the inning was cut short on a laser throw by left fielder to get Levinson out.
The squad will return to Barry University on Tuesday, March 11 for a night game starting at 6 p.m.
