Queens, N.Y. - The Adelphi University swimming and diving team came out on top in the tri-meet against the Queens College Knights and CUNY Baruch Bearcats on Thursday night, hosted on the campus of Queens College. The men upended the hosts 67-43 and Baruch 51-44, while the women beat the Knights 59-53 and Baruch 70-25.
The Panthers claimed first place in three out of the four relay races on the night. The teams of
Heather Miller,
Sarah Aiello,
Jacqueline Vani and
Laura Vanella won the women's 200-yard medley relay, while Vani,
Amanda Crosby,
Kelly Whelan and
Danielle Dreiss claimed victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. On the men's side,
Zachary Mazur,
Gerry Theophilidis,
Ryan Mullin and
Peter D'Ortenzio won the men 200-yard freestyle relay, while
John Bellotti,
Josef Victor Sarabia,
John Rotolo and
Ryan Walpole claimed second in the 200-yard medley relay.
Individually, the Panthers claimed eight first place finishes. Dreiss claimed first in the women's 1000-yard freestyle, putting in a time 11:08:15; she finished over a full minute ahead of the second placer finisher, her teammate Crosby. Rotolo picked up a first place finish in the men's version of the event, also finishing 30 seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Baruch.
Miller was a dual individual winner on the night, claiming first in the women's 200-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard backstroke, while Vani picked up a win in the 200-yard individual medley. Mazur also snuck out a win in the men's 50 freestyle, finishing just .02 seconds ahead of Matthew Stypulkowski of Queens. Rounding out the Panthers' winners were
Morgan McCurdy, who won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:48.20, and Vanella, who picked up her win in the 100-yard breaststroke.
