Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to #1 West Chester, 7-2

The Panthers knotted the game at one early in the first half, but couldn't come any closer.

Mary Plotas sparked the Panther offense, picking up a goal and an assist.
Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team played host to non-conference and national #1 West Chester University today on Motamed Field. Mary Plotas knotted the action at one just before the 15 minute mark in the first half, but that was as close as the Panthers would get, falling 7-2. WIth the loss Adelphi sits at 0-1 overall, while the Rams run their win streak to 11 games overall, dating back to 2012 and are 1-0 on the season.

The opening minutes of the first stanza saw the Panthers playing a lot of defense, but Kelly Serrao and the Adelphi defense kept the Rams out of the net until 13:10, when Kelsi Lykens sent a bullet into the back of the goal off of a feed from Dayle Paustian to give West Chester a 1-0 lead. However, the Brown and Gold wasted no time answering back, as Plotas pulled the ball away from a Ram defender in front of the net and slotted into the West Chester goal, knotting the action at one at the 14:58 mark.

The Rams would counter with pressure, keeping the ball in their offensive third for extended period of times and eventually broke through, adding three more goals in the final 20 minutes of first half action as Stef Pirri, Alexis Versak and Nancy Stehman all found the back of the goal, putting Adelphi in a 4-1 halftime hole.

Plotas would spark the Panther attack again in the opening moments of the second half, sending a pass across the mouth of the Ram goal to a waiting Kristen Bagley, who knocked it past West Chester keeper, Sarah Krause, and pulling Adelphi within two goals, 4-2. Unfortunately, the Rams would go on the offensive again, getting goals from Pirri, Versak and Megan Callanan to secure a 7-2 victory.

West Chester held an edge in shots, 32-10, and penalty corners, 17-5, while the Panthers made seven more saves, 11-4. Serrao played all 70 minutes in the loss for Adelphi, making 10 stops, while Krause made four saves for the Rams.

Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts for a 7:00 pm clash with Assumption.
