Box Score
West Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University baseball team came out on the winning end of a pitching-dominanted 2-0 decision at the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Friday. The Panthers improve to 23-22-1 overall and 11-8 in division play, while the Chargers, tied for first place in the division, drop to 27-13 overall and 13-6 in Southwest competition.
Adelphi pitchers
Jonathon Mulford,
Jeff Andersen and
Dillon McNamara combined to fire nine shutout frames against New Haven, with Andersen picking up the winning in 3.2 innings of perfect relief. Mulford tossed the first 4.1 innings and allowed no runs on four hits with four strikeouts, while McNamara picked up his league-leading 13th save of the year in a hitless inning.
Richard Mejia registered the only RBI of the contest on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly to complement a 1-3 day at the plate.
Donato Signore and
Ray Triano each doubled, with Triano scoring the game's first run on a failed pickoff attempt in the fifth.
For New Haven, starting pitcher Pat Simone threw two shutout innings before Frank Vilacha got the call from the bullpen and suffered the loss despite going seven frames and allowing just two hits and one earned run. At the plate, four Chargers recorded a hit with Nick Nunziato delivering a double in the second inning.
Pitching prevailed handily over the hitters through the first four innings, but Triano's leadoff double in the fifth got things going for Adelphi.
Vincent Sharkey followed with a single to move Triano to third, and after a walk loaded the bases and a fly ball to left was not deep enough to score the runner, a failed pickoff attempt plated what proved to be the winning run. Mejia ripped a lineout to right that brought in a second run, but one would be enough for the Panther pitching staff in the shutout effort.
Andersen was untouchable in relief and faced the minimum, bridging the gap to McNamara, who worked around a walk in the ninth to slam the door on an NE-10 victory.
The Panthers close out the regular season with two more games at New Haven and have secured one of the four playoff spots in the NE-10 Southwest. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
