#14 Softball Sweeps Southern New Hampshire

The Panthers scored a total of 12 runs on the day, while holding the Penmen to just three.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Manchester, NH - The 14th ranked Adelphi University softball team traveled to Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday, April 6 for a two game set with Southern New Hampshire University. Adelphi out scored the Penmen, 12-3 on the day, collecting wins of 5-2 and 7-1, improving to 23-7 overall and 16-1 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents.

Game One
The first two innings of play swept by scoreless, but in the top of the third Adelphi finally broke through. The Panthers put runners on first and second with one out as Kayla Rieger worked a walk and Emily Dorko slide her to second with a bunt single. A fielder's choice pulled Rieger off the base paths, but put Heather Salerno on and brought Victoria Wink to the plate with two outs. Wink got a pitch she liked and drove it out, over the wall in left center and giving Adelphi a 3-0 lead in the process.

The Penmen got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a single run on a two out single that allowed a runner to score from first. Adelphi would add two more runs, one in the top of the sixth and the seventh. Meghan Heiser drove in the run in the sixth, scoring Katie Andrews on a single to center, while and Andrews single to left center in the top of the seventh plated Dorko.

Southern New Hampshire loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Adelphi starter Devon Kelly allowed just one run in the inning, getting the final two outs on a foul pop and a ground ball to back to the mound. In all, Kelly threw seven innings, struck out five and walked one to collect her ninth win of the season.

Dorko and Andrews registered three wins each as Dorko was 3-4 with two runs scored and Andrews was a flawless 3-3 an rbi and a run scored. Wink was 1-4 at the plate, but her only hit was her seventh home run of the season.

Game Two
The second game was all Adelphi, as the Panthers put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning and never looked back. All five runs in the first came courtesy of home runs, Wink slammed a two run shot over the wall in center, followed two batters later by a Jeanine Leo three run bomb over the fence in left, 5-0.

The Penmen scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the second on a two out double to center, but a harmless ground out to first ended the rally. The next few innings would flash by scoreless until a Southern New Hampshire error allowed Amy Caird to slip home. The Panthers reached the run total of seven in the top of the seventh on when Andrews took advantage of a wild pitch to swipe home, 7-1.

The rest of the work was done by Laurin Watts, who was outstanding, going seven innings, striking out eight, walking two and giving up just five hits to collect her Northeast-10 leading 13th win of the year. Andrews and Jaclyn Binstock registered two hit games for Adelphi as Andrews was 2-3 with two runs scored and Binstock was 2-3 with a run scored.

Adelphi returns to action on Sunday, April 7 when they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire for a doubleheader against Franklin Pierce.
