Box Score

Kutztown, Pa. - The Adelphi University baseball team came out on the losing end of a 16-10 offensive extravaganza at #13 Kutztown University in non-league play on Wednesday. Despite clubbing a season-high 17 hits, the Panthers drop to 11-12-1 overall, while the Golden Bears climb to 18-5 and earn their 12th win in the last 13 games.

The hosts used six runs in the fourth to stake a 7-2 before the Panthers jumped ahead 8-7 with six runs between the fifth and sixth. Kutztown answered with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead, however, and tacked on four more in the eighth to put the 35-hit affair in the books.

Brandon Stahl went a season-best 4-4 in his ninth multiple-hit game of the year and scored a pair of runs to spark the top of the Adelphi order. Anthony Zarrella slugged three hits including a double and tied a career-high with five RBI, while Vincent Sharkey batted 2-4 and crossed home plate three times. The Panthers sent six pitchers to the hill, with starter Jonathon Mulford going four innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits in the no-decision. Matt Abramowitz received the loss in an inning of relief, and Nikolas Batas was the lone Adelphi pitcher to record an out without giving up an earned run to the hot-hitting Golden Bears.

For Kutztown, Brett Hauck, Kyle Stoudt and Ricky Gorrell each had three hits and combined to drive in nine of their team's 16 runs. Hauck smoked three doubles, knocked in three runs and scored twice, while Stoudt doubled and collected a team-best four RBI. Gorrell finished the day 3-4, drove in a pair and swiped two of Kutztown's five stolen bases. J.R. Seader grabbed the win on the mound in an inning of relief despite surrendering two runs on three hits in the sixth. Stoudt started at pitcher and allowed two runs on five hits before moving to designated hitter, while James Rossi and Jordan Garcia each hurled an inning of scoreless relief.

The Panthers broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the third on Zarrella's two-run single with two outs. The Golden Bears halved the deficit on a Hauck RBI double down the right field line, then seized a sizeable 7-2 lead with a six-run, seven-hit effort in the fourth. Three straight two-out singles pushed four runs across before Hauck unloaded another RBI double, and Stoudt polished off the frame with a base hit to left to score the seventh run.

Adelphi chipped away at the lead with a three-run fifth as the Panthers rattled off four straight singles followed by a Donato Signore sacrifice fly to make it a 7-6 game. Two more runs in the next inning put Adelphi back in the driver's seat for the first time since the third thanks to a sac fly by Kevin Hutzel and Zarrella's RBI double to right. The lead would not last, however, and Kutztown tossed up another crooked number with five runs on four knocks in the bottom of the sixth. Hauck's third double of the game plated a leadoff walk, and a pair of singles and a throwing error made it 11-8 with nobody out. Back-to-back ground outs left Adelphi one out away from ending the grueling inning, but Gorrell laced an RBI single to give his squad a 12-8 lead through six frames.

The Golden Bears added four runs to their cushion in the eighth, marking their third multiple-run stanza of the evening. A leadoff triple and successive base hits forced Adelphi to tap its bullpen for the fifth time, and a fielder's choice followed by Stoudt's two-run double pushed the home team's lead to 16-8. The Panthers mounted a brief rally in the ninth as three consecutive pinch-hit singles gave Adelphi its ninth run. Anthony Vazzana rolled an RBI ground out to plate Anthony Infante and put the Panthers in double-digits, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game by a 16-10 final score.

The Panthers resume Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday when they travel to UMass Lowell for a non-division doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
