Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The 23rd ranked Adelphi University softball team played host to Northeast-10 Southwest Division rival New Haven in a double header on Janet L. Ficke Field on Wednesday, April 24. The Panthers stranded 12 total runners on base this afternoon, dropping two games to the Chargers, 11-3 and 10-2. With the losses Adelphi falls to 35-15 overall and 15-3 in division, while New Haven improves to 32-11 and 13-5 in the Southwest.
Game One
The first game got off to a promising start for the Panthers, after limiting New Haven to just one run in the top of the inning, despite a bases loaded no out jam. Adelphi then hung three runs on the Chargers in the bottom of the first, as
Emily Dorko scored on a
Victoria Wink drive to right center and that was followed up by
Katie Andrews who hit a ball down the line in right, scoring two more runs, 3-1.
New Haven would get one run back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, before breaking the game wide open in the third and fourth with a combined eight runs on eight hits. The Chargers would add an 11th run in the top of the fifth on a single up the middle and kept the Panthers scoreless after the first, handing the Brown and Gold a, 11-3 defeat.
Laurin Watts was handed the loss, throwing five innings, striking out one and walking four. Both Dorko and
Heather Salerno had two hits in the game and added one run each, while Wink, Andrews,
Elizabeth Lindner and
Jordan Catalano also posted one hit each.
Game Two
New Haven controlled the action from the opening pitch of game two, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. However, it was the second and fourth frames which proved key for the Chargers, as they scored eight total runs on seven hits and took advantage of two Adelphi errors, moving out to a 9-0 lead.
The Chargers would add a 10th run in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers showed signs of life in the bottom of the frame, placing runners on first and second with one out. A Wink single up the middle would load the bases for Andrews, who's hard hit ball was misplaced by New Haven, allowing two runs to score. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Panthers would get, falling 10-2.
Andrews took the bump for game two and struck out three, walking one in the loss. Dorko managed three of Adelphi's four hits, going a spotless 3-3 with one run, while Wink was credited with the other Panther hit.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, April 27 when they travel to Albany, New York to start a three-game regular season ending set with the College of Saint Rose.
