Box Score 2 Brookville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team traveled to Brookville, New York on Tuesday, April 23 to take on local Long Island rival LIU-Post in a doubleheader. The Panthers were out hit in both games, falling 5-1 in the first and 6-4 in the second, which drops Adelphi's overall record to 35-13, while LIU-Post improves to 38-11.
Game One
Adelphi took advantage of an
Emily Dorko single in the first, moving her around the bases, before a
Katie Andrews drive up the middle brought her home, 1-0. However, LIU-Post countered with a solo shot to right center, knotting the score at one in the bottom of the inning.
The Pioneers got a home run, a run scoring single and worked a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third to score three runs, putting Adelphi in a 4-1 hole. A third LIU-Post home run in the bottom of the fifth would push the Pioneer lead to 5-1, which would be the final score, as the Panthers could muster just one base runner in the sixth and seventh innings.
Devon Kelly,
Laurin Watts and
Katie Andrews each went two innings, striking out a combined two batters, walking four and giving up nine hits, while Watts was credited with the loss, her third of the season. At the plate Dorko and Andrews accounted for all four of Adelphi's hits as both players went 2-3.
Game Two
Adelphi again got on the board first, this time Andrews drove in
Amy Caird, who reached earlier in the inning on a single through the left side, 1-0. But, the lead was short lived as a single by the Pioneers scored a run and knotted the game at one.
The momentum seemed to shift in Adelphi's favor in the top of the third when the Panthers first three batters produced hits, including
Victoria Wink, who's double down the left field line scored Dorko, 2-1.
Meghan Heiser would close out the inning with a two run single down the line in left, scoring Caird and Wink and giving Adelphi a three run cushion, 4-1.
However, LIU-Post pulled some of the momentum back, getting a run scoring single to stay within two runs, 4-2. Adelphi would cruise the next few innings and entered the bottom of the seventh still in front by two runs. LIU-Post would open the inning with a hit batter, then get a single and a walk to load the bases and with one swing sent Adelphi home in defeat, hitting a grand slam over the wall in left and stealing a win from Adelphi, 6-4.
Watts went six innings, striking out four and walking three, collecting her fourth loss of the season. Caird, Wink and Heiser produced two hits each, while Dorko and Andrews picked up Adelphi's other two hits.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, April 24 when they welcome New Haven to Janet L. Ficke Field in Garden City, N.Y.
