Springfield, Mass. - The Adelphi University baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at American International College on Saturday, winning the opener 3-0 behind solid pitching efforts before falling 16-4 in game two.
Chris Pabisch pitched six shutout innings to lift Adelphi to victory in the opener, allowing six hits and striking out six in his fourth win of the season.
Donato Signore went 3-7 on the day with three runs scored and smacked a solo home run in the opener, while
Brandon Stahl drove in a pair in game two.
For the Yellow Jackets, Dave Clark batted 4-9 over two games and drove in four runs in the nightcap. Dan Asselin cracked four hits, tripled and collected three RBI, while Dan Fenton led all hitters with a 5-9 showing that included a double, RBI and three runs.
Game One
Pabisch baffled the AIC hitters in the opener and bridged the gap to
Jonathon Mulford for 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Dillon McNamara then came on for the five-out save, allowing one hit and striking out four to take the NE-10 lead with 11 saves on the season.
Matt Lee suffered the loss for the Yellow Jackets despite throwing eight innings of two-run baseball. Lee scattered six hits, struck out two and walked none, but Signore's fifth inning bomb would be the deciding hit in the game. The Panthers went hitless against Lee into the fourth before
Kevin Hutzel knocked a single to right, and the visitors grabbed two runs the following inning on Signore's leadoff homer and an RBI double by
Vinny Gaetano.
Chad Houghton pushed across an insurance run for the Panthers in the ninth with a sacrifice fly that scored
Richard Mejia who had reached on a leadoff base hit. The Yellow Jackets threatened to mount a rally when faced with their final two outs as a dropped third strike and single put runners on first and second, but McNamara coaxed a 6-4-3 double play to put game one in the books.
Game Two
Adelphi ran into trouble from the get-go as AIC tagged the Panthers for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff error was followed by a strikeout, but the Yellow Jackets put nine straight batters on base before two more strikeouts finally retired the side. A single and a walk loaded the bases with one gone and Asselin unloaded a bases-clearing triple to put AIC out front 3-0. Zach Kane followed with a triple of his own to score Asselin and then came across on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. A single, walk, error and three-run double capped the monstrous inning and slap the visitors with an early eight-run deficit.
The Yellow Jackets added four more runs over the next three frames, using two runs on three hits in the second and lone runs in the third and fourth to jump ahead 12-0. Houghton got the Panthers on the board in the fifth with an RBI single, but AIC stretched its lead to 14-1 on a two-run double by Vallas in the sixth.
A trio of unearned runs in the top of the seventh narrowed the gap to 14-4 as Signore walked,
Vincent Sharkey singled and Houghton moved them over without a groundout. An error on the infield brought in a pair and Stahl followed with a two-run single to cap the three-run effort. The hosts added two more in the bottom of the seventh, however, as a bases-loaded walk and one-run single spelled a 16-4 lead for AIC.
The two squads face off for a single game tomorrow at 12 p.m. to decide the series.
