Box Score 2 West Haven, CT - The 13th ranked Adelphi University softball team traveled to West Haven, Connecticut on Tuesday, April 16 to face-off against Northeast-10 divisional foe New Haven.
Jeanine Leo was the hero of game one, while
Emily Dorko drove in the winning runs in game two, giving the Panthers wins of 3-2 and 5-3. With the sweep Adelphi improves to 30-9 overall and 12-2 in the Southwest Division, while New Haven falls to 26-10 overall and 8-5 in division.
Game One
The first three innings passed in a scoreless haze, but the action came quick and hard in the fourth inning, as Adelphi hung three on the board in the top of the inning, followed by two from New Haven in the bottom of the frame. The Panthers first run was scored by Dorko who crossed the plate on a
Victoria Wink double down the left field line after opening the inning with a single. Two batters later a Leo drive to right center left her standing on second and cleared the bases, scoring Wink and
Katie Andrews, which put the Panthers ahead 3-2.
A bases loaded error in the bottom of the fourth allowed two New Haven runners to cross home plate and pulled the Chargers within one run but a ground out to Adelphi hurler
Devon Kelly ended the threat. Kelly would shut down New Haven the rest of the way, throwing seven innings, striking out five and walking one to collect her 14th win of the season.
Andrews and Leo led the charge at the plate, with both players going 2-3, Leo with two rbi and Andrews with a run scored. Dorko, Wink and
Jaclyn Binstock accounted for the other three Adelphi hits in the game.
Game Two
Adelphi put a run on the scoreboard early in game two, taking advantage of a bases loaded illegal pitch from New Haven, to slip in front, 1-0. The host Chargers would respond with two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead 2-1 and then added a third run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to push their advantage to 3-1.
The Brown and Gold battled back in the top of the fifth, loading the bases on a walk from Andrews and singles from
Kayla Rieger and
Meghan Heiser.
Amy Caird would work a walk, bringing home Adelphi's second run and then Dorko would smack a triple to right field, clearing the bases and putting Adelphi ahead 5-3, which is how the game would end after six innings due to darkness.
Laurin Watts collected her 14th win of the year after tossing five full innings, striking out four and walking three. Dorko led the offense, going 2-4 with three rbi and a run scored, while
Heather Salerno was 2-3. In addition, Wink, Rieger and Heiser all picked up hits in the win.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, April 17 when they play host to Caldwell College at 3:00 pm in Garden City, New York on Janet L. Ficke Field.
