Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University basebal team had its bats silenced in a 3-0 loss at Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Finnerty Field on Tuesday. The Panthers slip to 17-16-1 overall and 6-4 in the division, while the regionally-ranked Setters climb to 24-9 overall and 9-1 in division play to stand atop the Southwest.
Pace starting pitcher Jonathan Chudy took a perfect game into the seventh and a no-hitter into the eighth en route to a two-hit shutout victory. Chudy struck out 10 batters in 7.2 frames and Tim Deegan tossed 1.1 innings for the save.
For Adelphi, starter
Jonathon Mulford took the tough-luck loss in seven innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs with a pair of K's.
Dillon McNamara threw an inning of shutout relief to preserve his spotless earned run average on the season.
Brandon Martineson went 2-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored for the Setters, while Joe Solomeno drove in two with a single and sacrifice fly.
John Campbell was the lone Panther to reach base more than once by going 1-3 with a walk.
Anthony Zarrella and
Kevin Hutzel each poked singles, but the six through nine hitters for Adelphi went a combined 0-11 on the day.
Pace got on the board in the second as James Pjura and Martineson scorched back-to-back doubles and Solemeno lofted a sac fly to put the Setters up 2-0. Mulford would allow just two hits over the next three innings, but the Setters tacked on another run in the sixth by way three straight one-out base hits.
Adelphi saw its best scoring catch pass by in the eighth as Zarrella and Hutzel knocked consecutive singles to put runners on first and third with no one out. Chudy struck out the next batter before surrendering a walk, and Deegan came on to secure the final two outs of the inning.
The Panthers hit the road again tomorrow for a non-league game against cross-island rivals LIU Post at 3 p.m.
