Baseball Splits with Assumption

Panthers drop game one 10-3, outrun Greyhounds 13-12 in nightcap

Donato Signore had five hits, four RBI and the go-ahead RBI ground out in game two of a doubleheader split with Assumption College on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader against Assumption College on Saturday, falling 10-3 in game one before coming back to win the nightcap 13-12 at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers move to 16-15-1 overall and 5-3 in the division, while Assumption is now 10-20 overall and 5-2 in the Southwest.

Game One

In the opener, Assumption scored in all but two frames and took advantage of five Adelphi errors to post a seven-run victory. Travis Smith led the way with three hits including a double, and Santi Palmer got the win in 5.1 innings while giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

For Adelphi, Kevin Hutzel batted 3-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base, and Donato Signore and Vincent Sharkey each knocked two hits. Chris Pabisch received the loss despite allowing just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
The Panthers put up a two-spot in the home half of the first on Nick Zito's single, but the visitors would score four unanswered runs over the next two innings to take the lead. Hutzel drove in a run in the fourth to make it a 4-3 game, but the Greyhounds pushed across six runs between the fifth and eighth innings to take game one.

Game Two

The Panthers narrowly outlasted Assumption in the nightcap and took the lead for good on Signore's RBI groundout in the eighth. Adelphi roped five doubles in the contest and were led by Signore's 3-4 performance and four RBI. Anthony Zarrella batted 2-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI, Sharkey hit 2-3 with a two-bagger, four runs scored and a pair of walks, and John Campbell also finished 2-4 while crossing the plate twice.

James McCormack picked up the win in two innings of one-run relief, and Dillon McNamara tied the Adelphi single season saves record after closing out his ninth save of the season with three strikeouts in the ninth.

For Assumption, Smith cracked three more hits including a double and two RBI, and Ben Benigno went 3-4 with a RBI and two runs. Dan Bradley took the loss over two innings after surrendering two runs on four hits, capped by Signore's go-ahead groundout.

The Greyhounds jumped ahead with four runs in the second on two bases-loaded walks and an RBI single by Smith, but a Chad Houghton RBI single in the home half preceded a four-run outburst for the Panthers in the third to tie the game at 5-5. Zarrella singled home Sharkey, Signore smoked a two-run triple and Brandon Stahl poked an RBI base hit through the left side to complete the four-run inning.

Assumption answered with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Adelphi came right back with two of their own on Richard Mejia's RBI suicide squeeze and a passed ball that plated Sharkey. Both sides went scoreless in the fifth, but the Greyhounds moved ahead 9-7 with two in the top of the sixth on a two-run double. The Panthers would not quit, however, and rallied for four in the home half on a Mejia single, Zarrella's bases-loaded walk, Zito's RBI fielder's choice and  an RBI double by Signore.

A two-run triple and sacrifice fly for Assumption in the seventh cut the Adelphi lead to 12-11, but the Panthers picked up single runs in each of the next two innings to set the stage for McNamara's save in the ninth.

The two squads face off against tomorrow to complete the series with an NE-10 Southwest Division tilt at 1 p.m.
