Box Score
New Haven, Conn. – The Adelphi University baseball team won its fourth straight game by way of a 7-3 victory at Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Wednesday. The Panthers clubbed 14 hits for the second time in as many games to improve to 15-14-1 overall and 4-2 in the division, while the regionally-ranked Owls drop to 15-11-1 overall and 1-5 in the Southwest.
The Adelphi offense, which posted at least 14 hits from the third game in a row, was led by
Kevin Hutzel, who went a career-best 5-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Brandon Stahl batted 2-5 with a two-bagger, two runs and an RBI, while
Donato Signore and
Vincent Sharkey each singled twice.
Starting pitcher
Jonathon Mulford was solid again, throwing seven innings and scattering eight hits without allowing an earned run to improve to 3-0 on the season.
SCSU knocked 11 hits despite scoring just three times, and were led by a 3-for-4 effort by T.K. Kiernan. Ryan Yerina was saddled with the loss on the mound as the Panthers tagged him for six runs (three earned) on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Adelphi got on the board in the first with two runs on two hits. Stahl belted a leadoff double and moved to third on Hutzel's single.
Anthony Zarrella loaded the bases with a fielder's choice, which allowed
Richard Mejia and
Nick Zito to exchange RBI groundouts to put the Panthers up 2-0. The Owls also struck in the first, plating a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Mulford worked out of trouble, however, and rolled a 4-6-3 double play to strand three runners.
Mejia's sacrifice fly in the third gave Adelphi a 3-1 lead, and RBI base hits for Stahl and Hutzel the following inning stretched the advantage to 6-1. Mulford settled in and rolled over the SCSU lineup unharmed through seven frames. Hutzel cracked another RBI single in the eighth to spell a 7-1 lead as
Chris Pabisch came on in relief for Mulford. Pabisch retired the side in order in the eighth, but the Owls threatened with a brief rally to pick up two runs on three straight hits in the ninth. Pabisch silenced the final two batters with a strikeout and ground out, however, to seal the 7-3 victory.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host Assumption College for an NE-10 Southwest doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
