Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to former East Coast Conference rival Molloy College on Tuesday, March 5 on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panther bats were quieted in game one to the tune of 3-0, but rebounded in game two to collect a split, 3-2. With the victory Adelphi improves to 4-1 overall, while Molloy sits at 5-3.
Game One
Molloy scored all their runs in the first three innings of the contest, getting one in the top of the first on a single to center that scored a runner from second. The other two innings crossed the plate in the top of the third on a double and a single down the line, giving the Lions a 3-0 cushion.
Adelphi managed one hit in the first and the third and stranded runners on on first and second base respectively. THe Panthers started a rally in the seventh, placing runners on the corners thanks to a
Katie Andrews single and a Salerno single, but that was as close as Adelphi would get to the plate, dropping the contest, 3-0.
Andrews was credited with the loss after throwing 2.1 innings and striking out three, while
Laurin Watts tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out five and walking three. Salerno swung a hot bat for the Brown and Gold, going 2-2 with one walk, while both
Victoria Wink and Andrews notched hits.
Game Two
Adelphi struck first in game two, hanging two runs on the board in the bottom of the second. Adelphi turned a
Jaclyn Binstock hit by pitch and a
Jeanine Leo walk into runs on a
Meghan Heiser single and a
Emily Dorko single, pushing out to a 2-0 lead.
Molloy answered back in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits, including a single to center that tied the game at two all. After a scoreless half inning from both teams, the Panthers came up in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Binstock singled up through the middle with one out and was then driven home when Andrews hit a rope down the left field line, givine Adelphi a 3-2 win in a game that was called due to darkness.
Devon Kelly went four innings for the Panthers, striking out one and giving up six hits, while Watts tossed an inning of scoreless relief, striking out two to grab the win. Both Andrews and Dorko were 2-3 with one RBI, while Binstock was 1-1 with two runs and a walk.
Adelphi returns to action on Friday, March 8 when they open up play in Kissimmee, Florida against Notre Dame De Namur at 1:00 pm.
