Baseball Falls to St. Michael's Twice, 4-3 and 3-1

Panthers swept despite solid efforts from starting pitchers

Stephen Bove went eight innings and struck out three in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader against Saint Michael's College.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University baseball team fell twice in Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader action against Saint Michael's College at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field on Saturday, losing 4-3 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap. The Panthers drop to 7-9-1 overall and 0-4 in NE-10 play, while the Purple Knights improve to 5-9 and 2-2 in league action.

Adelphi received solid efforts from its starting pitchers despite the final outcome of the games. Jeff Andersen went seven innings in game one, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts, and John Bivas took the loss in a third of an inning of relief. Stephen Bove threw eight frames in game two and gave up three runs while carefully scattering 12 hits in a tough luck loss.

Brandon Stahl swung the bat best for the Panthers, going 3-7 on the day, while Donato Signore and John Campbell each plated the lone earned runs with sacrifice flies in games one and two, respectively. Ray Triano cracked three singles in the second game and Kevin Hutzel went 2-3 with a run scored.

For Saint Michael's, Nick Myers tossed a complete-game one-run six-hitter to get the win during the back end of the doubleheader. Jacob Begnoche paced the offense with a 5-8 day, Alex Tice went 3-5 with two RBI in game two and George Buteau plated the game-winning run with a sac fly in the eighth inning of the opener. Kevin Guild secured the victory in the first contest by tossing three frames of perfect relief to snap the Purple Knights' nine-game losing skid.

Game One

Adelphi took an early lead with one run in each of the first three innings. Stahl poked a single to lead off the game, moved to second on Signore's infield hit, stole third and scored as the catcher's throw sailed into left field. Next inning, three straight hits loaded the bases for Signore, who lofted a sac fly to center to plate Vincent Sharkey and take a 2-0 lead. In the third, a single, walk and two errors with two away gave Adelphi its third run and a 3-0 advantage.

The Panther bats would go silent the rest of the way, however, and Saint Michael's opened up a four-run surge in the eighth to seize a 4-3 lead. Chris Puliafico led off with a line drive double to left center and Don McGuirl singled to center to put runners at the corners. Tyler Wild singled up the middle to score Puliafico, Tice snuck a bunt single to the left side to load the bases, and Corey Livingston drew a walk to force in the second run. An outfield error tied the contest, and Buteau's sac fly to center pushed the Purple Knights in front 4-3 after seven and a half.

Guild would be lights-out the rest of the way, retiring all nine Panthers he faced to close the door on game one.

Game Two

The Purple Knights cracked open a 3-0 lead after three innings in the second game and never looked back despite Bove settling in nicely on the hill for five shutout frames. Tice ripped an RBI single up the middle in the first and laced another one-run base hit to cap a two-run third, which gave Myers enough of a lead to work with in the complete-game stint.

Adelphi cracked the scoreboard in the fifth inning after a one-out walk gave way to back-to-back hits for Triano and Stahl. Campbell's sac fly to center prompted Hutzel to cross the plate, but Myers coaxed a groundout to end the threat. The Panther bats struggled to find momentum for the remainder of the game as Myers faced just four over the minimum after allowing a run in the fifth.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they host Dominican College for a non-league contest at 3:30 p.m.
