Springfield, Mass. - The Adelphi University women's lacrosse team picked up their first Northeast-10 Conference victory of the season with a dominating 19-2 victory over the Yellow Jackets of American International College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Yellow Jackets slip to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The Panthers were led by
Alexa Froccaro and
Sara Sangiorgio, each of whom recorded four points behind four goals.
Rachel O'Brien and
Danielle Jaycox also recorded four points, each scoring three goals and dishing out one assist.
Emily Keesling and
Devan Crimi netted two goals apiece while
Lauren Janelli recorded two points behind one goal and one assist. On defense,
Jacqueline Williams picked up five ground balls to lead the Brown and Gold. In goal,
Taylor Langston picked up her first collegiate win, as she played all 60 minutes, allowing two goals and making one save.
As a team, the Panthers dominated in all categories. They led 44-4 in total shots, 32-3 in shots on goal and converted on 4-8 free position attempts. Although both teams picked up 18 ground balls, the Panthers led 15-5 in draw controls and caused 13 turnovers to the Yellow Jackets' nine.
Adelphi took a 5-0 lead in the first half behind goals from five different players. Crimi's ninth score of the season opened up proceedings for Adelphi, which was followed by goals from Keelsing, Sangiorgio, Froccaro and O'Brien. Kristen Angeletti put AIC on the board with their first score at the 10:48 mark, but Jaycox, Froccaro and Keelsing all followed with unassisted goals and with five seconds remaining, Sangiorgio found the back of the net off a pass from
Melyssa Mathewson for her 10
th of the season, to finish off a 9-1 half for Adelphi.
In the second frame, all but one of Adelphi's goals were unassisted as the stickwomen opened up a 13-1 lead behind goals from O'Brien, Jaycox, Froccaro and Crimi. The Yellow Jackets' second goal came courtesy of Meg Solitario at 16:47, but Adelphi scored six more unanswered goals to put the game out of reach and wrap up the victory.
The #5 Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 9 for their home opener against the Rams of Philadelphia University. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 pm.
