Bowling Beats Nation's Best in Day 1 of Music City Classic

Panthers knock off #1 Central Missouri, go 5-1 for sixth place in standings

The Panthers defeated #1 Central Missouri and three-time NCAA champion Nebraska in day one action at the Music City Classic.
Smyrna, Tenn. - The Adelphi University women's bowling team defeated the top-ranked team in the nation on the way to a 5-1 showing on the first day of the Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University on Friday. The Panthers stand in sixth place heading into Saturday's team play action.

The Panthers started the day against Sam Houston State University. The Bearkats jumped out to a game one lead but the squad made it close in game two, trailing by only seven pins. SHSU then capitalized on outstanding strike shooting and some Panther miscues to capture the match by 78 pins, 804-726.

Adelphi then faced the three-time NCAA Champion Corn Huskers of the University of Nebraska. The Panthers came out strong and threw a consistent series, going 204,213,213, and 215 to come away victorious by 88 pins, 845-757. By defeating the Corn Huskers, the Panthers can know lay claim to having defeated all four universities that have captured an NCAA title since the championship's inception.

The LadyTechsters of Louisiana Tech battled the Panthers early but could not handle Adelphi's sustained fire power that resulted in a 93-pin win, 710-617. The Panthers then faced the top team in the NCAA in the Jennies of the University of Central Missouri. Adelphi lead by 83 pins after three games, but facing elimination, the Jennies fired seven straight strikes in the final game. Despite the late effort by the top-ranked Jennies, the Panthers held on for a 28-pin win, 794-766.

Texas Southern University could not answer the bell as the Panthers dispatched them by 190 pins, 792-602. The final match of the day saw Adelphi complete the day with the ladies of Prairie View A&M University. The Brown and Gold rolled out a 87-pin victory, 778-691.

The Panthers completed the day in sixth place in the field of 29 teams which includes 18 of the top-20 programs in the nation. Adelphi now stands at 70-33 on the season and return to action in team play today.
