Box Score
Boca Raton, Fla. - The Adelphi University baseball team suffered a 13-4 loss to Molloy College on the campus of Lynn University on Monday. The Lions clubbed 19 hits and scored in six of their eight turns at the plate to improve to 3-13, while the loss sends the Panthers to 3-3-1 overall.
Molloy pitcher Shea Spitzbarth earned his first collegiate win by throwing seven innings of one-run baseball, scattering five hits and striking out six. Keith Dolega threw a perfect ninth to close the door and snap the Lions' six-game losing skid.
Six players had multiple hits for Molloy, who collectively slugged six extra base hits. Max Greenough went 3-4 out of the eight hole, and Robert Inzerillo went 2-6 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Ray McCourt batted 2-4, tripled and scored twice, while leadoff man Greg Walsh went 2-4 with a two-bagger and scored three times.
For Adelphi,
Richard Mejia went 2-4 with a pair of RBI singles, and
Brandon Stahl doubled to cap a 2-4 performance.
Vinny Gaetano collected a pair of hits and drove in a run to finish a three-run effort for Adelphi in the sixth inning.
Jeff Andersen received the loss on the mound in 4.2 innings of work. A pair of costly errors deminished Andersen's efforts, as only one of six runs were earned during his outing. None of Adelphi's five pitchers would escape untouched as the Lions were effectively aggressive and put the leadoff batter on base six times.
A three-run first progressed into a 6-0 lead for Molloy after five frames, highlighted by Inzerillo's two-run double in the second. The Panthers halved the deficit with three runs in the sixth, beginning with Mejia's RBI single to right that scored Stahl from third.
Nick Zito pushed across an unearned run with an RBI groundout, and Gaetano laced a turf burner up the middle to bring in Mejia from second.
The Lions answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the seventh courtesy of four hits and a walk. Mejia cracked his second RBI base hit of the game to plate a run in the eighth to make it 12-4, but Molloy's 13th run of the contest came across in the bottom half to secure the final score.
Adelphi returns to play tomorrow evening at 22nd-ranked Barry University at 6 p.m.
