Bowling Earns Third Place at DSU Capital Classic

Zink named to All-Tournament Team, Panthers knock off top-10 squad

Sophomore Holly Zink was named to the All-Tournament Team with a 223.4 average over Adelphi's 10-3 weekend.
Dover, Del. - The Adelphi University finished the Capital Classic in third place after completing a 10-3 weekend at Delaware State University. The Panthers defeated one of the nation's top-10 teams in #7 Fairleigh Dickinson University.

In individual honors, Holly Zink was selected for the All-tournament team with a 223.4 average.

The weekend started with Baker play on Friday. First up for the Panthers were the Hornets of DESU. Adelphi trailed throughout the match as DESU opened with a commanding 268 effort. The Panthers shaved the lead down put came up short by six pins, 867-861. The two-time defending NCAA champion UMES scored a 176-pin victory (876-700) as the Panthers were incapable of rallying back in the match. Adelphi turned things around and finished the day with three straight wins, starting by knocking off Howard University by 73 pins, 735-662. The Pirates of Hampton University began the match with a fine 245 effort but fell to Adelphi by 22 pins, 783-761. Morgan State University was stopped by a 794-729 Panther effort in the final Baker match of the day.

In day two action, the Panthers completed a perfect 5-0 slate and extended their win streak to eight matches. Adelphi faced the Aggies of North Carolina A&T and took a seven-pin win (975-968) as Samantha Morlack (235) and Zink (207) led the way. The Panthers then faced the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights saw four Panthers fire out 200-plus pin efforts, completing a 33-pin victory (1092-1059) as Morlack (259), Erica Schneider (236), Zink (209), and Jessica Lutz (203) helped avenged a heart-breaking two-pin loss to FDU at last weekend's Northeast Conference event. North Carolina Central University was unable to stave off Zink (232), Lutz (211) and Schneider (201) as the Panthers marched to a 189-pin win, 1020-831. Adelphi then unleashed a forceful 337-pin onslaught against Cheyney University as Zink (263), Morlack (226) and Schneider (216) spearheaded the 1086-749 win. The final win of the day came against the Terriers of St. Francis College (N.Y.) as Kathryn Rivera (224) and Zink (206) helped the Panthers to a 71-pin win, 980-909.

Day three action began with the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. The Gothic Knights blistered the lanes with a 279 game to open the best-of-seven match. The Panthers came back to claim game two but fell 4-1 as NJCU fired off five consecutive 200-plus pin efforts. The Panthers returned to their winning ways, sweeping hosts DESU 4-0. The final match of the day saw Adelphi claim revenge on NJCU, stopping the Gothic Knights 4-2 in the final match and claiming third place for the tournament.

The Panthers are now 57-25 on the season and return to action when they host the AU Singles tournament on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 12 p.m. at Garden City Lanes. The event is a fund raiser for Lupus research. The Panthers will also host the ECAC Championship on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 9 a.m. at Garden City Lanes, when they will look to defend their 2012 ECAC title.
