Wallingford, CT - The Adelphi University women's bowling team wrapped up the first half of their season attending the second Northeast Conference event this past weekend in Wallingford, Connecticut. They concluded the tournament 3-5 in team and baker play, making them 5-11 in the NEC. This places Adelphi seventh in the NEC, with one more regular season event remaining slated for March 2-3, 2014.
Day One
The National Tenpin Coaches Association released their December rankings at the NEC No. 2 event with the field consisting of seven of the top 20 teams in the nation. The Panthers checked in at No. 13 falling from No. 11 in the November poll.
The Brown and Gold started the day with a good start, defeating twelfth ranked Sacred Heart University by seven pins, 1028-1021. They continued the trend as they defeated the No. 9 Golden Bears of Kutztown University by 140 pins, 973-833.
In the third match of the day, the No. 17 Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn rallied with a fifth game 235 effort to stun the Adelphi keglers by 32 pins, 1005-973. Following that match, the No. 11 Red Flash of St. Francis University came from behind and snuck past the Panthers at the finish by 6 pins, 942-936.
The final match of the day switched from Baker play to team play as the No. 20 Blackbirds of LIU, on the strength of a 247 effort by anchor Brittany Hart, rolled to a 40-pin win, 986-946 despite valiant efforts by
Holly Zink (244) and
Michele Fitzpatrick (215).
The squad finished the day 2-3 and were currently tied at 4-9 with LIU for 6th place.
Day Two
The Brown and Gold returned to action in team play at the NEC second event of the season with mixed results. The day started well enough as the Panthers took on the No. 9 Golden Bears of Kutztown University.
Kathryn Rivera rolled out a 226 effort and despite a 262 gem by Deanna DiRaolo of KU, the match was decided by 47 pins, 903-856.
The Pioneers of Sacred Heart University got even for a loss in Baker play on Saturday to the Panthers as anchor Nicole Trudell fired the last 4 strikes of the match to close the Panthers out by 30-pins, 959-929 despite another fine effort by Rivera (204) and an assist to
Michele Fitzpatrick (218).
In the final match of the day
Holly Zink (195) gave it her all but was unable to match the fire power of No. 4 FDU, falling by 215 pins 1091-876.
The Panthers were 1-2 on the day and 3-5 for the weekend taking them to 5-11 in NEC play with one regular season match remaining to be hosted by Adelphi University at Sheridan Lanes in Mineola, NY on March 2-3, 2014. The squad stands at 31-29 as they conclude the first segment of their season.
