Garden City, N.Y. – Outscoring their opponents 197-78 in their first two games, the Adelphi University women's basketball team defeated the Chestnut Hill Griffins, 85-32 on Friday evening in the Center for Recreation and Sports. With the loss, the Scarlet and Gold drop to 0-2 thus far as the Panthers jump to 2-0 overall.
Going 11-15 from the field and 5-6 at the line, senior
Jessica Kitrys had a team-high 27 points and four rebounds while freshman
Calli Balfour chipped in 14 points and six rebounds of her own.
Sade Jackson contributed in all aspects, having eight rebounds, nine points and nine assists in the win. The team collected 40 rebounds in 40 minutes and had 17 steals, on Chestnut Hill's 37 turnovers.
The Panthers jumped out to a 14 point lead just five minutes into the game as the Griffins suffered from missed shots and six turnovers. Shayla Felder, who had five points for Chestnut Hill, brought the margin to single digits on a layup off a steal by leading-scorer Erica McIntosh.
Heading into the locker room the Brown and Gold had a 27 point cushion, 49-22, as Kitrys dropped 14 points and Balfour added 12 of her own in the first half. Six other Panthers had points in the first half including
Shannon Flynn with five and Jackson with seven.
The second half more or less mimicked the first, as the Brown and Gold jumped to an eight point lead just three minutes in, with Kitrys responsible for six. Over the next 10 minutes, Adelphi would go on a 19 point run, increasing the margin to 57, 82-25. A final three-pointer by
Samantha Milhaven with less than two minutes to go in the game would give Adelphi a 53 point win, 85-32.
