Box Score
Garden City, N.Y. - Snapping their three-game losing streak, the Adelphi University field hockey team came out victorious on Saturday afternoon as they hosted Northeast-10 Conference opponent Saint Anselm College. With the 5-2 win, Adelphi improves to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference, while the Hawks fall to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in NE-10 play.
Senior captain Jamie Ackerman was the first to strike, as she was awarded a penalty shot in the 29th minute of the first half. Hitting the top left corner of the cage, the Panthers found themselves ahead of the Hawks 1-0. Answering back less than five minutes later, the Blue and White evened the score at one in the 37th minute on an unassisted shot by Colleen Sears.
Ackerman was called to the line for another penalty shot opportunity, just minutes after starting the second half. Her attempt flew past Saint A's goalkeeper Katherine Sears to give Adelphi a 2-1 lead. The Hawks were able to respond to this just 10 minutes after, on a shot by Canada Stewart who received the ball from Rose Mooney, putting the score at 2-2. Much of the second half would go back-and- forth between the teams, but not before three other Panthers found opportunities to strike.
Kristen Bagely and Carly Aceves each fired shots on assists from Molly Cuevas that found the back of the cage in the 47th and 48th minute, respectively. Lena Pollich added a goal of her own on an assist from Olivia Nowokunski, with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
In the win, Adelphi had a 24 to nine shot advantage over the Hawks, as well as a 16 to four penalty shot advantage. Goalkeeper Kelly Serrao picked up 6 saves in the victory, while Saint Anselm had 12 total saves.
Coach's Thoughts on the Game
"I thought we came out really aggressive this game," commented Head Coach Gloria O'Connor. "You can tell the difference when everyone plays as individuals and when the girls play as a team. Today we played together and were able to pick up the win."
