Box Score

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the field hockey team took on the Mavericks of Mercy College in a non-conference contest. After a slow first half that saw just one goal in favor of Adelphi, the Panthers ramped up their offense and tacked on another three in the second to come away with a 4-1 victory. With the win, the Brown and Gold march back over .500 at 5-4, 0-1 NE-10 while Mercy continues to search for their first win of the year as they dip to 0-8.

Despite the Panthers 14 shots and nine penalty corners in the first half alone, the duo of Mary Plotas and Molly Cuevas provided the only action in the initial 35 minutes and it came early on at the 8:32 mark. Cuevas set up Plotas who notched her fifth goal of the season after beating Mercy goalkeeper, Kristen Znaniecki, for the 1-0 lead.

Opening the second, Kelly Serrao made two big saves after Mercy came out firing three shots in a span of just seven seconds, but were unsuccessful in each of their attempts. Plotas, once again, opened up the scoring in the second frame and gave her team the 2-0 lead with the assist coming from Carly Aceves.

The Mavericks answered with their first score of the game less than ten minutes later off of the stick of Samantha Burke with the assist going to Brittany Roser, cutting the deficit in half.

With less than nine minutes remaining, Cuevas once again set up a scoring opportunity in which teammate Lena Pollich capitalized on; finding the back of the net for the two-goal Adelphi cushion. Keeping their foot on the gas, Adelphi had four penalty corners in the final 5:46 and benefitted from one of them in the latter minutes of the game. Kristen Bagley, at the 68:47 mark, successfully converted her penalty stroke, notched her third goal of the season and put the nail in the coffin on the 3-1 victory.

Adelphi out-shot the hosts 20-11 and doubled Mercy up on penalty corners, 14-7. Serrao made four saves in the win.

Coach's Comments
"It was a great win against a well coached team," stated Head Coach Gloria O'Connor. "I give credit to coach Kinsley and her team. The game was closer than the score indicates. Now we need to work hard the rest of the week and prepare for our first conference win!"
