Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University field hockey team secured its first win of the season thanks to a game-winning goal in overtime by senior
Cassie Cabral to push the Panthers past Bentley University 2-1 in Northeast-10 Conference action on Motamed Field on Saturday. Adelphi improves to 1-8 and 1-1 in the NE-10, while the Falcons drop to 4-4-1 and 1-1 in conference play.
Despite dominating on offense in the first half, the Panthers couldn't find the back of the net and played a scoreless first half. The Falcons held the lead for most of the second half, until freshman
Molly Cuevas tied up the action with her fourth goal of the season. The game remained tied until the end of regulation and the Panthers headed for overtime for the second time this season. In the 76th minute, Cabral scored the game winner to give the Panthers their first win of the season.
Both teams had opportunities in a scoreless first half but the Panthers led in both major offensive categories. Cabral and senior Emiliee Rahner led the Panthers with two shots in the half, as the team took seven shots total to the visitors' three. The Panthers also led five to one in total corners. The teams were tied in shots on goal and saves with two apiece.
In the second half, the Falcons had a scoring chance in the 42nd minute as senior goalie
Kristine Puzio had vacated the net, but sophomore
Briana Rubenstein was there with a diving stop to pick up the defensive save. However, the Panthers couldn't hold off the Falcons scoring threats for much longer, as Kaitlyn Marcinek found the back of the net for the visitors in the 46th minute for the lead.
The Panthers did not register a single shot in the second half, until Cuevas scored off of a diving chip on her own rebound in the 60th minute to tie the game. In overtime, an early penalty corner for the Panthers went unconverted and the Panthers defense came up with some big saves to bring the ball back to the other end. In the 76th minute, Cabral took a shot from the left on an assist from junior
Jamie Ackerman and found the back of the net for the win.
The Panthers outshot the Falcons 10 to seven and also led in total corners, nine to one. Puzio picked up two saves in the win and Julia Powell had three saves for Bentley in the loss.
Adelphi will be back on the field on Wednesday, September 26th, as the Panthers host Mercy College in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m.
