Brookville, N.Y. – Earlier this afternoon, the #1 women's lacrosse team took on the #5 Pioneers of C.W. Post University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. After a 6-6 tie at halftime, the Panthers were outscored 8-5 in the second half and fell by a score of 14-11. With the loss, the Panthers conclude the season at 16-3 while the Pioneers move to 14-3 and advance to the NCAA Final Four.
Meg Brown led the Panthers with five goals on the day.
Devan Crimi had three points on two goals and one assist while
Erica Devito had two goals and
Marissa Mills and
Alexa Froccaro each had a goal.
Crimi got the Panthers off to a good start, attacking the cage early on and scoring the game's first goal just 2:49 in to give her team the early 1-0 lead. However, less than a minute later, C.W. Post's Lauren Stagnoletta leveled the playing field off of a successful free position shot. She struck again just before the 20 minute mark to give Post a 2-1 advantage.
Just 28 seconds off the Draw following the goal, Devito put in her first goal of the game on a shot from five yards out to make it a 2-2 contest. The Pioneer's Ashley Owen, on a feed from Stangnoletta, regained the lead at 3-2.
Over the next three minutes, Brown beat Dominque Mosca to knot it at three all. It sparked at three-goal run for the Panthers which continued with a Mills score and another by Brown once again to give the Brown and Gold a 5-3 lead.
Jackie Sileo and Crimi would go on to exchange scores to keep it a two goal Panther advantage, but over the final four minutes, Stagnoletta and Ashley Owen converted on back-to-back scores to close out the half and make it a 6-6 game.
Off the opening draw in the second, Nan Mayott gave the Pioneers their first lead since the 16:47 mark in the first on her first goal of the game. Samantha Losco, Katie Rotan and Stagnoletta followed up the Mayott score with goals of their own to cap a six-goal run that began at the 3:41 mark in the first half.
Down by four, Brown stepped up and stopped the bleeding with her third goal of the game to keep it a three-goal contest on an assist from Crimi. Five minutes later, Devito put in her second goal on a successful free position attempt, cutting the deficit to two.
However, just 59 seconds later, Owen found the back of the net for the third time, growing the Pioneer lead back to three at 11-8.
Freshman Froccaro brought the Panthers closer as she picked up a loose ball near the cage and put in an overhand shot for her first of the game,
However, the tandem of Owen and Mayott scored on back-to-back attempts, marking their fourth and second goals of the game respectively and growing their lead to 13-9 in the process.
Brown brought the Panthers back to within two on two more goals, but a fifth goal by Owen put the Pioneer lead back up to three at 14-11, which is how the game would conclude.
