Farnum's game-tying home run not enough as Owls walk off in bottom of 11th

Justin Farnum cracked his third home run of the season, a game-tying two-run bomb in the eighth inning of Wednesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss at Southern Connecticut.
Box Score

New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University baseball team fell 4-3 to #21 Southern Connecticut State University in extra innings via a walkoff single by Bryan Dorsey in the bottom of the 11th inning in Wednesday's Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest. Trailing 3-1 headed to the eighth inning, senior Justin Farnum crushed a two-run homer to tie the game, but Dorsey's two-out game winner evened the season series at one game apiece. The Panthers move to 19-18 overall and 8-6 in the Southwest, and SCSU climbs to 27-12 and 9-4 in the division.

Farnum stroked a game-high four hits, going 4-5 with his third home run of the season to pace the Panthers. Anthony Zarrella went 2-3 with a double and an RBI, and stole one of four Adelphi bases on the day. Chris Pabisch started on the hill and threw 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs while striking out five. Dillon McNamara and James McCormack threw a combined 2.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit apiece and each fanning two batters. Matt Abramowitz took the loss in 2.2 innings of work, giving up the lone run and recording three strikeouts.

Pabisch and Owls starter Rocco Cundari mowed through their opposing batting orders the first four innings, but SCSU cracked the scoreboard in the fifth after Sam Greenberg reached on a leadoff error and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Adelphi tied it up in the top of the sixth when Farnum ripped a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Zarrella's two bagger, but the Owls countered with two more runs in the bottom half, chasing Pabisch from the game with three hits in the inning.

Farnum's blast in the eighth would tie the game, and Abramowitz came up with a timely strike out with the bases loaded in the ninth to send the game to extras. The Panthers threatened in the 10th, loading the bases with one away, but back-to-back strikeouts sent Adelphi back to the dugout empty handed. The Owls went down in order in their half of the 10th, as did the Panthers in the 11th, and Adelphi was within one out of escaping to the 12th frame. Dorsey had other plans, however, and knocked the game-winning base hit to right field to end the extra-inning affair in walkoff fashion.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they host Molloy College in a non-league contest at 3:30 p.m.
