New Haven, CT – Earlier this afternoon, the #1 women's lacrosse team took on the #6 Chargers of the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Panthers split even frames, scoring five goals in each half while the hosts were just one behind. After all was said and done, it was the Brown and Gold that came out on the winning end of a 10-8 score. With the victory, Adelphi advances to 14-1, 11-1 NE-10 while UNH moves to 12-4, 7-4 NE-10.
Marissa Mills (3G, 1A) provided much of the offensive duties with three goals while also dishing out one assist. Her second score in the final 30 minutes of play sparked a much needed four-goal Panther run in which
Devan Crimi (1G) and
Erica Devito (1G, 1A) contributed to, marking their only goals of the game.
Adelphi took an early 1-0 lead courtesy of
Sara Sangiorgio (1G) on the first possession just 46 seconds into the game on a Devito feed.
Danielle Jaycox (1G) did her part with a goal in the first while
Meg Brown (2G) found the back of the cage on two occasions in the first, each of which gave her team a temporary go-ahead goal to break the tie.
UNH's Sarah Magnone and Ashley Fernandez tied the game at 2-2 and 4-4 in the first, but at the half, the Chargers found themselves down by one at 5-4. However, the slate was even for the third and final time when Kathryn Campbell found the back of the cage just 39 seconds into the half.
A four-goal Panther run made it a 9-5 game with just over 20 minutes left to play, but the host team fought back, responding with a three-goal run of their own with Alexis Gabbe, Nicole McKee and Natalie Lieberman all taking the equal share of the credit attributed to the consecutive scores.
With 10:20 remaining, Adelphi hung on to a 9-8 lead. The ensuing 7:15 featured a scoreless drought which was finally broken by freshman
Alexa Froccaro (1G, 1A) when she sent in a shot that beat UNH goalie Maureen Spellmen. The effort proved to be just enough to hang on as the Chargers were stopped in their tracks and would not get any closer.
Jordann Dempsey recorded her 14
th win of the season, logged all 60 minutes in cage and made four saves in the process.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, April 28 when they take on cross-town rivals and fellow Long Island lacrosse powerhouse #5 C.W. Post at 4pm.
