Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team played host to the seventh seeded Chargers of the University of New Haven in Northesat-10 Playoff, quarterfinal action on Tuesday, April 24 on Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead two innings into the action, but faltered down the stretch, falling 5-4. With the loss, Adelphi falls to 34-18-1, while New Haven improves to 28-19 and advances to the double elimination portion of the tournament.
After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers got a double from
Jaclyn Binstock and a single from
Kayla Rieger to put runners on corners with one out in the second.
Heather Salerno responded with a shot up the middle that scored Binstock and sent Rieger to second, putting runners on first and second and giving Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
Jeanine Leo followed up with a walk, loading the bases for
Victoria Wink, who slapped a single up the middle, plating Salerno and Rieger, 3-0 Panthers. New Haven led off the top of the fourth with a double and took advantage of an Adelphi error to score one run, cutting the Panther lead to 3-1.
After a scoreless turn at the plate for both teams, Binstock pushed the Brown and Gold cushion back to three runs, 4-1 with a solo home run over the fence in left center with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. The Chargers responded in the top of the sixth, loading the bases and then getting a bases clearing double, knotting the action at four with nine outs remaining in the contest.
Adelphi went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, while New Haven loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh, but could only muster one run, taking a 5-4 lead with three outs remaining in the game. The Panthers put runners on second and third with just one out in the bottom of the seventh, but
Katie Andrews hit a hard liner to the second baseman, who caught the ball and tossed it to second, finishing the double play and securing the win for New Haven, 5-4.
Devon Kelly opened up the game for Adelphi, throwing four full innings, giving up one run and striking out four, while
Laurin Watts threw two innings of relief, striking out two and walking two. Andrews closed out the game on the mound for the Panthers, allowing just one hit.
Binstock led the way for Adelphi at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Dorko was 2-3. Wink was 1-4 with two RBI, while Salerno was 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Panthers will now wait for the NCAA to announce the Division II East Regional field this coming Sunday, to see if their 2012 season will continue.
