Box Score 2 Manchester, NH - The Panthers continued their weekend stay in Manchester, New Hampshire with a double header against Southern New Hampshire. Adelphi completed the sweep of the Penmen, collecting wins of 6-5 and 5-4, closing out the regular season with a record of 34-17-1 overall and 22-8 in the Northeast-10, securing the #2 seed in the upcoming NE-10 playoffs.
Game One
The Panthers got going in the top of the first when
Victoria Wink smacked a one out double, and was then driven home by
Meghan Heiser, who launched a home run over the wall in left center, 2-0 Adelphi. The Brown and Gold would add two more in the top of the third, getting the first when
Jeanine Leo opened the inning with a home run to center and scored the second on a wild pitch that allowed Wink to sneak home, 4-0.
The Penmen mounted a comeback in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on on two home runs, cutting the Adelphi lead to just one run, 4-3. Southern NH would knot the game at four with another run in the bottom of the fourth on a home run to left, but a Wink line out to center in the top of the fifth, allowed Leo to sneak home, returning the lead to Adelphi, 5-4.
But, Southern New Hampshire pulled even one more time, using a single to left to knot the game at five in the bottom of the fifth. Fortunately for Adelphi,
Katie Andrews needed just one swing of the bat to score what would become the winning run, leading off the bottom of the sixth with a bomb that cleared the fence in left field, making the score 6-5 Adelphi.
Devon Kelly, Andrews and
Laurin Watts combined in the seven inning win. Kelly opened the action with 2.2 innings pitched, striking out one and allowing three runs, while Andrews threw the middle 2.1 innings, with two runs and two strikeouts. Watts closed out the game, tossing the final two innings to collect her ninth win of the year with a walk the only blemish in her stat line.
Wink, Heiser and Leo were all 2-3, as Heiser scored one run and drove in two, while Wink and Leo scored two and added one RBI. Andrews and Binstock also added one hit each in the win.
Game Two
The second game was an eight inning affair that saw the Penmen get out to a hot start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Southern New Hampshire added a third run in the bottom of the fourth, pushing their advantage to 3-0. The Panthers finally got on the board in the top of the fifth, courtesy of an
Amanda Krier double that scored
Emily Dorko and pulled Adelphi within two runs, 3-1.
The Brown and Gold kept the offensive pressure high, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth The first two runs of the inning came off the bat of
Jacqueline Grant, who's pinch hit double scored
Kayla Rieger and Binstock. The third run of the inning was plated by Wink, who scored Dorko with a single, 4-3 Adelphi.
Adelphi then had Southern New Hampshire down to their last out, but a Penmen home run breathed new life into the game, knotting the action at four and forcing an extra frame. In the extra inning, the Panthers got a sacrifice fly from Wink, plating Rieger for the winning run.
Watts, Andrews and Kelly combined again in the win, with Watts starting the game this time, going 3.2 innings striking out six and giving up three runs. Andrews threw 3.1 innings of relief and struck out two, giving up just two hits, while Kelly was credited with the win, her 14th of the season, after shutting the door on the Penmen in the eighth.
Adelphi will return to action on Tuesday, April 24 when they play host to seventh seeded New Haven on Janet L. Ficke Field for a spot in the double elimination portion of the Northeast-10 Tournament.
